Something strange is happening at the Riddle Key Luxury Retirement Living Center and Golf Course. It’s the kind of place where everyone dines before 5 o’clock and goes to bed before sundown. Though death is a regular visitor to the Center, few people are dying of natural causes.
In this hilarious comedy about greed, sex, revenge, and retribution, three denizens of Riddle Key confess their crimes directly to the audience in three interconnected monologues. Not a Whodunit (this we already know), the riddle to be solved is why ordinary people take extraordinary measures when confronted with life’s challenges.
Meet the hapless Gerald, for example. He tells us his story in a monologue entitled “The Man Who Married His Mother-in-Law.” A simple scheme to save his girlfriend’s inheritance from the IRS goes badly awry when Gerald tries to right an injustice. Lucy of “Margaret Faydle Come to Town” relates the tale of the proverbial straw that broke the back of both her marriage and her propriety. Minka of “Match Wits With Minka Lupino” leads us into her labyrinth of crime and punishment, a true avenging angel whose victims get what’s coming to them.
Superbly written by acclaimed playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, “Murderers” celebrates the spell-binding art of storytelling, where a single actor on the stage can hold an audience completely in their thrall. For three performances only.
