The 2023 Shorts Film Program takes our Boulder Jewish Film Festival audience through 90 minutes of entertaining and vivid storytelling through a variety of genres, including comedy, drama, animation, MOS* and documentary. From Europe to the USA to Israel and back, all six short films will make you smile. Two of our films, one British, one Israeli, touch on father-daughter relationships, and a documentary film about a Jewish American inventor is produced and directed by his own daughter with great attention and tenderness. This year we feature an animated short, produced and directed by high school students who were paired with a Holocaust survivor through the remarkable Righteous Conversations Project.

Short films are often the beginning of a filmmaker’s career. Each year we feature student filmmakers and we follow their careers – some of our selected directors have progressed into making successful full-length films. Experiencing the creative development of our filmmakers is one of the benefits in featuring this unique medium in the festival. We hope you will enjoy this year’s short film experience.

Many thanks to our 2023 Short Film Selection Committee: Adam Edelman, Dick Golden, Susan Litt, Sara Sturz, Jill Temkin and Wendi Temkin.

Libby Berry & Rochelle Schwartz, Short Film Program Assistants.

Judith Dack, Director of BJFF Short Film Programs.

The Chop  17 min  (2016) UK

Directed by Lewis Rose

‘The Chop’ is a comedy about Yossi, a charismatic Kosher butcher who loses his job. Unable to find work in other Kosher butcher shops, he pretends to be Muslim in order to work as a Halal butcher.

Pops   19 min (2021) UK/France | Directed by Lewis Rose

How would you react if your father’s last wish was a little bit out there? For siblings Roz and Elli, it becomes a battleground for who will determine their Pops final journey. ‘Pops’ is a Jewish comedy-drama about family, religion and how we choose to honor a life well-lived.

A Prayer For My Mother: The Eva Brettler Story (9 min) USA

Produced by The Righteous Conversations Project, a collaboration between Holocaust survivors and teen filmmakers. A Prayer for My Mother: The Eva Brettler Story is an award-winning animated film that chronicles the extraordinary saga of Holocaust survivor Eva Brettler – a child facing brutality and profound loss who finds sustenance in faith and her own dreams for the future.

Beetroot Soup (23 min) Israel | Directed by Tom Weintraub Louk

Jasmin’s plans for Passover are unfortunately interrupted when a sudden unannounced visit by her husband’s mother and sisters ensues. During the evening a variety of inappropriate family dynamics arise, including the mother-in-law’s disturbing compulsion to touch Jasmine’s pregnant belly.

Miriam (6 min) Israel | Directed by Shulamit Lifhshitz

Matchmaking, the Israeli way! No words are needed for this short comedic MOS set in Jerusalem. A devoted father is prepared to go to any lengths to secure his daughter’s romantic happiness.

Eddy’s World (18 min) USA | Directed and Produced by Lyn Goldfarb

This documentary is an engaging portrait of a 101-year-old toy inventor.  Best known for the iconic Yakity Yak Teeth, Eddy Goldfarb is the inventor of nearly 800 toys including Stompers, Vac-U-Form, Kerplunk and the Bubble Gun. Today, Eddy lives in a retirement community where he converted his garage into a machine shop. Optimistic, creative and curious, Eddy is an endearing storyteller who shares his philosophies of life and his wisdom on aging.
