In 2017, resourceful members of the Bay Lake Woodturners Club (BLWC) in Green Bay, WI and other supporters teamed up with a US and Kenyan-based non-profit, Health Education Africa Resource Team (HEART) to start a project to inspire young adults in Kisii County, Kenya to create a business opportunity by introducing them to woodturning and life skills, spiritual, health and wellness, teamwork, and entrepreneurship training. Graduates have changed their outlook on life and gone beyond woodturning to support their households by start other businesses including motorbike taxi, barbershop, poultry keeping, carpentry, tent/chair rental, and vegetable farming.
The film highlights the inspiring stories of three of the graduates Vinic, Brian, and Felix who are becoming leaders of the program and in their community. For the program to sustain and grow, HEART is in need of a permanent facility. Land was purchased and plans are in the works to build a NextGen Empowerment Center with an expanded woodturning facility and to add other programs including brick making, wood kiln, fishponds, beekeeping, candle/soap/scent making, vegetable farming, coffee processing and others.
All profits and proceeds will be donated to the HEART NextGen fundraising goals.
