This affectionate parody of the slapstick films of the silent film era is also a great example in popular media of the “meta” trope wherein a show story is about an altered version of the show itself. Mel Brooks plays an aging film director trying to pitch the concept of a silent film in then-present 1970s. It’s a brilliant ensemble cast with the only word spoken aloud being by the mime Marcel Marceau. (Mel Brooks, 1976, USA, 1:27, NR)
