Ága

Glenn’s Pick by Glenn Webb, Director of Programs –

At first glance, it might look like an anthropological documentary about how the Yakut people live in the Far North, but Ága is actually a family drama told in a strikingly sparse way. Rather than sharp dialogue and plot pyrotechnics, this movie shows an old couple going about their daily lives in breathtaking detail, as they move through a landscape, of which they seem to be just an extension. There is stark beauty in their lives and their simple pairing, as they long for their daughter who has left, and we can only guess why. In the end, this is a classic story of generations pushed apart by change, made only more poignant by the vast whiteness surrounding their feelings. Join me Thursday evening for a talk back.
