Open Studios has for nearly a quarter-century been a visible and successful supporter and promoter of visual art and artists in Boulder. Founded by Gary Zeff in 1995, the nonprofit organization began as the free, self-guided Open Studios Artist Tour held each fall, during which juried artists welcome the public into their workspace to show their work, answer questions and explain their process. Most Open Studios artists do not have agents promoting their work, so the event gives their art invaluable exposure: dozens of people will see it each day during the tour. Unlike an art gallery, the studio tour provides informal and non-intimidating settings that enable both seasoned collectors and folks who have never bought a piece of art to share the joy of discovery. If an artwork changes hands, both parties are thrilled, but the tour is not primarily about buying or selling; it is about fostering art, encouraging artists and expanding knowledge about art. And all the while, everyone is sharing an experience—and having a very good time!
