Pottery Workshop: Halloween Themed Platter Using Sgraffito & Stenciling

Join us to bring a Halloween narrative to life on clay. By using a combination of vinyl stencils and a carving technique called sgraffito, participants will have the chance to create a Halloween-themed plate using classic holiday images and original ideas of their own. Stencils allow the artist to bring precise, controlled images to their decoration surface. Sgraffito provides the opportunity for makers to illustrate on pottery and add a more fluid, organic look to the overall aesthetic. Participants will be guided through both decoration techniques and get the chance to experiment on test tiles before moving on to create a design for their plate. No clay experience is necessary. The only requirements are a willingness to take creative risks and be in the spirit of the spooky season.

Meet the Maker:

Jeff Osgood has been working in clay since 1995 when he first moved to Boulder, Colorado. He soon became a member of the Boulder Potters’ Guild and has served as the organization’s Workshop Chairperson. Jeff teaches ceramics at the Watershed School in Boulder and offers a variety of courses that introduce handbuilding skills, wheel throwing, and a myriad of decorative techniques. His passion for US Southwestern pottery, both historic and modern, led him to join a community of potters who replicate pottery styles using materials and methodology from the archaeological record. Jeff co-facilitates the Southwest Kiln Conference, an annual gathering of potters, archaeologists, and ceramic enthusiasts. Jeff’s own work is predominantly hand carved functional pottery, using a combination of decaling, stenciling and sgraffito. His work has been featured in podcasts, the Charlie Cummings Gallery and a variety of in-person and online juried shows.
