Glenn’s Pick – Glenn Webb, Director of Programs – Based on a novel by British music critic Norman Lebrecht, THE SONG OF NAMES is a bit of a mystery, and a bit of a character study in survivors guilt, and a purposefully reserved story that leaves much of the strong emotional content submerged, which can feel like a relief in a media environment of shouts and tirades. Directed by the capable hand behind “The Red Violin,” François Girard, whose attention to detail is crucial as we follow several flashbacks to unwrap the story. And being a story with music at the center, three-time Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore provides much of the feeling to underscore a masterfully controlled performance by Tim Roth. This one checks lots of boxes. I hope it does the trick for you, as well.
