Glenn’s Pick – Glenn Webb, Director of Programs –
I can’t remember who said it, whether it was Utah Phillips or Woody Guthrie or someone else, but the quote is, “Music is way too important to leave it to the professionals.” Now I have utmost respect for professional musicians, for the hard work and dedication it takes, and the powerful emotions they can evoke with their art, but I can also say that my understanding of Bluegrass grew exponentially when I started learning the banjo. Fiddlin‘ is a trip inside a world of participatory music and dance, where cultural tradition is a source of connection and joy. Generally, I don’t care for arts competitions, but this event is a gathering and sharing where the competition is the hook, but not the reason, where some of the best music happens away from the main stage.
