Meet Elwood P. Dowd: a kind, easygoing gentleman with an unusual best friend. His name is Harvey, and he happens to be a 6-foot-3½-inch invisible rabbit.
Elwood is perfectly content with this arrangement. His sister, Veta, is decidedly not. Desperate to preserve the family’s social standing, she attempts to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. Instead, a spectacular misunderstanding sends doctors, relatives, and respectable society itself scrambling to decide exactly who belongs on which side of the asylum door.
Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy is warm, witty, and wonderfully strange, asking a deceptively simple question: Who gets to decide what “normal” looks like?
At its heart, Harvey is a celebration of friendship, kindness, and the possibility that the person everyone thinks has lost touch with reality may understand what matters better than anyone else.
