The Firehouse Art Center presents Slay the Runway Designing Safe Spaces for LGBTQIA+ Youth

Slay the Runway is a Firehouse Art Center Fashion Design program offered at no cost to LGBTQIA+ youth and Youth allies to support self-expression. Our goal is to be a safe space for teens to explore their own true style in a Gender Expansive and supportive community.
With cohorts in Longmont and Boulder, instructors start with simple projects that improve student sewing and design skills. As confidence builds, students are challenged to develop their own self-identity as they create an outfit for the showcase. At the fashion show, students unveil something they’ve created in their style and voice while surrounded by a community sharing their life experiences. In addition to garment construction and design, participants will work with make-up artists and choreographers to refine their debuts. While there are fashion camps and sewing classes in the area, no other local offerings address the issue of safe spaces for gender-expansive youth with this depth of creativity, and it is the only program that is no cost to participants.
Slay the Runway’s goal is to create an affirming and accessible space where creativity, expression, and positive self-image are celebrated.
