Carmen Hintch-Bustamante

My name is Carmen Hintch-Bustamante, a 16-year-old high schooler at Monarch High School. I was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to loving parents and an older brother. My mother is Honduran and my father is from Iowa.  When I was 4, we moved to Guyana to work for the Red Cross in public health. When I was 7, we lived in Michigan and then moved to Colorado, Virginia, Colorado, Virginia and back to Colorado.  All with my dad’s jobs in the Red Cross. You might say, we are an international family. My life has opened many doors such as, as I got to see very different ethnicities and cultures. Growing up in many different locations, I had to build up a lot of resilience.   As an artist, I want my art to express my view of the world by expressing my different perspectives. There are many sides to our reality, and I want to show this in my art.  I believe that people of color, people who love one another without being ashamed of it, and all the people who go on and live their day to day lives deserve to be happy.  Secondly, I want to express my experiences of harassment and discrimination and how resilient I am. Finally, I hope to express what I think needs to be changed about the world by showing stories that make viewers open their minds.  My art will reach all human emotions so people feel they can achieve anything. I want to create comics and portraits of people who inspire me and make me feel like I can be authentic proud of my work. I want to create beauty through telling a story, whether that’s about rights, something funny and relatable, or a cute romance story that grabs the hearts of others. No matter the plot, I want to create human rights stories combined with human emotions. My passion is a variety of digital media.
