Film Screening followed by Q&A with the filmmaker Khashem Gyal
This film illuminates life in a Tibetan boarding school for orphans. It follows the quest for belonging by 13-year-old Metok Karpo to find her father in her native grasslands- spotlighting a young girl living tenaciously in a society undergoing radical transformation. The title refers to Tebatan children living on the plateau, a place closest to the sun on earth, in the hopes that they will have a bright future.
Khashem Gyal is an award-winning filmmaker from the Amdo region of Tibet. In 2018, he was nominated for the Adeste Gold Medal, recognizing global citizens under 40 who help us ‘dream bigger.’ He is currently an Asia in Action Artist at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University.
