RIOT: A Subversive Rock Cabaret

The world premiere of RIOT includes a 100% femme-identifying cast. Inspired by the subversive genius of Pink Floyd, particularly in The Wall, Animals, and The Dark Side of the Moon, RIOT takes the spirit of these works into new territory. Through contemporary, cabaret, ballet, physical theatre and satirical language, RIOT moves the audience through a world shaped by systems of control and toward the question of what it means to reclaim one’s identity and imagine what might come after.
At the center of the work is Lavi McConaughey, Artistic Director, whose deep love for Pink Floyd’s anarchic roots led to a larger inquiry into power, sovereignty, and the collective creation of a different world. Grounded in a belief of the importance of matriarchal values——McConaughey brings these ideas into conversation through music, movement and theatre.
Its theatrical world is shaped by an original score composed by Chantil Dukhart, developed in dialogue with the themes, movement, and dramatic architecture of the work. Dukhart performs the score live alongside Halle Tomlinson and Susan Lucia. Together, performers work together to form an integrated ensemble, creating a theatrical experience in which music and movement are inseparable.
Choreographer Christiana Wheeler, of Corviva Dance Company, gives the narrative its physical language. Her choreography transforms the work’s political and psychological themes into embodied storytelling, creating a dialogue between the performers, musicians, and audience.
