Of the many screen adaptations of this Louisa May Alcott classic, this was not the first, as there were to silent versions from 1917 and 1918. But this version is considered very faithful to the original, and Katharine Hepburn’s portrayal of Jo has been widely praised. The film was nominated at the 6th Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director for Cukor and Best Adaptation, winning the latter. (George Cukor, 1933, USA, 1:55, NR)
