It asks: “is there a way to have dementia without tragedy\, when ‘to be or not to be’ is always the question?” \nCreated by Kirsten Wilson in honor of her mother and loved ones everywhere\, experiencing or caring for people with dementia. \n“No Contract” is a one-woman show by Kirsten Wilson about her mother’s dementia –Marie Wilson\, founder of ‘Take Our Daughters to Work Day\,’ LGBTQ+ leader\, author\, and equity-based feminist. \nThe dramatic ‘contract’ at the heart of this two-act performance is her mother’s request to be killed if she loses her mind. The production blends autobiographical storytelling\, “Hamlet\,” “King Lear\,” karaoke\, and audience engagement to explore the complex tension between choosing life and death—the “to be and not to be” of assisted suicide after a dementia diagnosis. \nIn “No Contract\,” Wilson uses humor & heart to prevent both the performance & her mother’s life from becoming a Lear-like tragedy. As Wilson says in Act One\, “My mother’s life was always supposed to be a romantic comedy\, a 1950’s musical\, except with lesbians dancing in the street. I will not let it turn toward tragedy.” \n*Note Wednesday\, 9/30/26 is a show for immunocompromised people. This is an opportunity to gather in community to use the performance to launch your own reflections and writings on the impact of dementia and fears associated with aging. The morning will begin with a performance of Act I\, followed by personal reflections\, writing and discussion on dementia. After a shared lunch within small reflections groups\, a performance of Act II\, with a facilitated dialogue\, writing exercises and reflections. Beginning in the 1930s\, Ross organized Dust Bowl refugees and during WWII he helped Japanese Americans find jobs and housing after release from the internment camps. After the War\, in the face of KKK activity\, he organized civil unity leagues in California by mentoring Mexican Americans and African Americans to build their voting power to challenge segregation in schools\, which led to a successful integration of local school boards across California’s Citrus Belt.  He worked from the understanding that while protests can draw attention to create sustainable change\, persistence and organization are required to build power and give people a voice in the decisions that shape their living and working conditions. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 23-27 \n“Burned\, beaten\, abandoned\, donkeys look back at us humans with indifference\, and bray.” this documentary– filmed over 5 years––subtly subverts the notion of the “dumb beast” as it captures donkeys communicating emotionally with each other in the midst of healing from human cruelty and neglect. A poetic text threads through scenes “acted” by donkeys\, a rhythmic script commentary voiced by Willem Dafoe. The ethno-poetic-animal-fiction takes its playfully self-reflexive cues from Jean Rouch and Chris Marker. Encouraging us to respect a major language barrier we might not otherwise consider––the mystery and intrigue of donkey utterances––DO DONKEYS ACT invites us to “step into their shade\, listen closely” as we attune to a series of dramatic performances in which we eavesdrop on donkeys speaking amongst themselves. Reclaiming the donkey from the indignity of a centuries old master slave relationship in which the dominant image of the donkey has been negative (stubborn\, buffoon\, jackass\, laborer\, trickster and fool)\, it elevates a denigrated and degraded beast to the role of lead actor and performance artist. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 23-27 \n“Burned\, beaten\, abandoned\, donkeys look back at us humans with indifference\, and bray.” this documentary– filmed over 5 years––subtly subverts the notion of the “dumb beast” as it captures donkeys communicating emotionally with each other in the midst of healing from human cruelty and neglect. A poetic text threads through scenes “acted” by donkeys\, a rhythmic script commentary voiced by Willem Dafoe. The ethno-poetic-animal-fiction takes its playfully self-reflexive cues from Jean Rouch and Chris Marker. Encouraging us to respect a major language barrier we might not otherwise consider––the mystery and intrigue of donkey utterances––DO DONKEYS ACT invites us to “step into their shade\, listen closely” as we attune to a series of dramatic performances in which we eavesdrop on donkeys speaking amongst themselves. Reclaiming the donkey from the indignity of a centuries old master slave relationship in which the dominant image of the donkey has been negative (stubborn\, buffoon\, jackass\, laborer\, trickster and fool)\, it elevates a denigrated and degraded beast to the role of lead actor and performance artist. It asks: “is there a way to have dementia without tragedy\, when ‘to be or not to be’ is always the question?” \nCreated by Kirsten Wilson in honor of her mother and loved ones everywhere\, experiencing or caring for people with dementia. \n“No Contract” is a one-woman show by Kirsten Wilson about her mother’s dementia –Marie Wilson\, founder of ‘Take Our Daughters to Work Day\,’ LGBTQ+ leader\, author\, and equity-based feminist. \nThe dramatic ‘contract’ at the heart of this two-act performance is her mother’s request to be killed if she loses her mind. The production blends autobiographical storytelling\, “Hamlet\,” “King Lear\,” karaoke\, and audience engagement to explore the complex tension between choosing life and death—the “to be and not to be” of assisted suicide after a dementia diagnosis. \nIn “No Contract\,” Wilson uses humor & heart to prevent both the performance & her mother’s life from becoming a Lear-like tragedy. As Wilson says in Act One\, “My mother’s life was always supposed to be a romantic comedy\, a 1950’s musical\, except with lesbians dancing in the street. I will not let it turn toward tragedy.” \n*Note Wednesday\, 9/30/26 is a show for immunocompromised people. This show provides the following: Audience capacity is at 30% to provide space for two empty seats between audience members. KN95 masks must be worn by performers and audience members. Air filtration used. 6 feet of space between performers and front row. 6pm performance. Take a day-long deep dive into the impact of caring for family members with dementia or negotiating your own fears of losing your mind with celebrated facilitator and artist Kirsten Wilson. This is an opportunity to gather in community to use the performance to launch your own reflections and writings on the impact of dementia and fears associated with aging. The morning will begin with a performance of Act I\, followed by personal reflections\, writing and discussion on dementia. After a shared lunch within small reflections groups\, a performance of Act II\, with a facilitated dialogue\, writing exercises and reflections. No skill as a writer necessary\, just willingness to courageously explore caregiving\, our mortality\, and dementia in community. (Lunch included in workshop fee).
