SUMMARY:BENOFF: The Hermit of Treig
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nApr 20 \nA meticulous diarist and avid photographer\, Ken Smith has spent the past four decades in the Scottish Highlands\, living alone in a log cabin nestled near Loch Treig\, known as ‘the lonely loch’. He has no electricity or running water. He lives off the land\, fishing for his supper\, chopping wood\, and even brewing his own tipple. Filmed over 10 years\, director Lizzie Mackenzie poetically captures Ken’s profound\, spiritual relationship with the wilderness: “If you love the land\, it loves you back”. Now in his 70s\, Ken reflects upon the reasons he turned his back on society\, the vulnerability of old age and the awe and wonder of a life lived in nature in this humorous\, transcendent and life affirming feature documentary. SUMMARY:Musical Vanguards at the Dairy presents: YAGÓDY
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nCo-presented by Sunflower Seeds Ukraine \nWith primal percussion\, hypnotic vocal harmonies and immersive ethno-drama performances\, Ukrainian folk group YAGÓDY brings their mesmerizing sound to North America for the first time this spring. \nThe four women of YAGÓDY are on a mission to preserve their culture by both reviving and reinterpreting folk songs while donning traditional clothing and costumes like the ornately embroidered Vyshyvanka. Sometimes heartbreaking and often rebellious\, YAGÓDY’s music is a testament to the land\, and spirit of the people of Ukraine. They poetically describe their concerts as\, “the songs of wild tribes. This is the voice of your ancestors. This is live energy. It is a dance with voices. This is how our nature smells. This is how our blood sounds.” \nThe self-titled debut album\, YAGÓDY\, released in 2020 introduced the world to their unique sound\, featuring powerful renditions of Ukrainian\, Bulgarian\, and Serbian folk songs. In 2024\, the group won over audiences at the Eurovision Songwriting Contest with their original song “Tsunamia” placing fifth at the national selection finals.\nYAGÓDY has performed at major festivals across Europe\, enchanting listeners in Poland\, Germany\, and beyond and are set to spread their rich history through vibrant concerts across North America.

SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nApr 22 \nCelebrate Earth Day and support Eco-Cycle. Agnès Varda’s extraordinary late-career renaissance began with this wonderfully idiosyncratic\, self-reflexive documentary in which the French cinema icon explores the world of modern-day gleaners: those living on the margins who survive by foraging for what society throws away. Embracing the intimacy and freedom of digital filmmaking\, Varda posits herself as a kind of gleaner of images and ideas\, one whose generous\, expansive vision makes room for ruminations on everything from aging to the birth of cinema to the beauty of heart-shaped potatoes. By turns playful\, philosophical\, and subtly political\, The Gleaners and I is a warmly human reflection on the contradictions of our consumerist world from an artist who\, like her subjects\, finds unexpected richness where few think to look. SUMMARY:The Decline of Western Civilization
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nApr 25 \nFor the month of April\, in conjunction with our PEEK theme of “new punk” we are showing weird punk movies\, old and new. \nFeaturing concert footage of Los Angeles punk bands and interviews both with band members\, the publishers of Slash fanzine\, and with the punks who made up their audience\, the film offers a look into a subculture that was largely ignored by the rock music press of the time. The promotional poster for The Decline (and the record cover of the soundtrack album) featured a close-up frame of Germs singer Darby Crash supine on stage with his eyes closed. Crash died from a heroin-induced suicide shortly before the film was released (the poster was designed before his death). Bands included are Black Flag\, Germs\, X\, Alice Bag Band\, the Circle Jerks\, Catholic Discipline\, and Fear. The Germs’ performance was replicated in the 2007 Darby Crash biopic What We Do Is Secret. (Penelope Spheeris\, 1981\, USA\, 1:40\, NR)

SUMMARY:For The Living
DESCRIPTION:Tickets\nApril 27 & 28 \nIn January 1945\, 10-year-old Holocaust survivor Marcel Zielinski made a treacherous 60-mile journey by foot from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Krakow\, Poland\, in search of his family. Decades later\, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced his path in an empathetic mission called Ride for the Living\, created and run by JCC Krakow. This powerful documentary draws parallels between Marcel’s harrowing experience and the cyclists’ journey\, sparking an urgent conversation about our ongoing struggle between dehumanization and empathy. With genocide still occurring nearly 80 years after Auschwitz\, especially with what we are witnessing right now in Ukraine\, this film is a poignant reminder of the importance of saying “Never Again” and truly meaning it. (Marc Bennett & Tim Roper\, 2024\, USA\, 1:57\, NR) \nThis special event will include the attendance of Co-Directors Marc Bennett & Tim Roper and Producer Lisa Effress\, who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A with Boulder JCC executive director Jonathan Lev after the screening. \n“For the Living weaves in the origins of Ride for the Living\, Holocaust awareness\, and what it means to examine the horrors of dehumanization.” – Danielle Solzman

SUMMARY:A Nice Indian Boy
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nApr 30 – May 4 \nWhen Naveen (Karan Soni\, Deadpool) brings his fiancé Jay (multiple Tony-award winner Jonathan Groff) home to meet his traditional Indian family\, they must contend with accepting his white-orphan-artist boyfriend and helping them plan the Indian wedding of their dreams. With a starry cast who are all supporting and fantastic goodwill/grassroots from a successful tour on the festival circuit\, this is a charming\, lovely\, heartwarming film that makes audiences smile.  And smiling is good!
