SUMMARY:Boulder Jewish Film Festival: Once Upon My Mother

Based on a true story that begins in 1960s Paris and spans decades of challenges and miracles\, this big-hearted\, exuberant crowd-pleaser was a huge hit at the French box office. SUMMARY:Boulder Jewish Film Festival: A Burning Man
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFriday\, October 30 at 12 PM \nAny parent with a child serving in the military during times of conflict can be expected to experience anxiety and even a sense of dread over their loved one’s safety. In Israel\, where military service is mandatory\, this excruciating experience is ubiquitous. Filmmaker Eyal Halfon was inspired to create a film that reflected his paternal protective instinct when his eldest son joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In this quiet fable\, a father drops his son off at a military base in the Negev. Pausing under an acacia tree just outside the gates of the compound where his son may be preparing for battle\, he becomes paralyzed by a profound sense of helplessness. Yonah\, beautifully played by acclaimed actor Shai Avivi\, is simply unable to leave. Nearby\, a rave party all too reminiscent of the Nova Music Festival is about to take place. Winner of the Best Israeli Feature Award and the Best Actor Award at the Haifa International Film Festival\, “A Burning Man” takes place almost entirely in one location. Yonah takes comfort in the kindness of a series of passing strangers – who represent a cross section of Israeli society – but there is no cure for the ache in his fearful heart. \nFollowed by a panel discussion with local parents with children serving in the IDF. \nFeature/103 minutes/In Hebrew/2026 \nWritten and directed by Eyal Halfon

SUMMARY:Boulder Jewish Film Festival: Tovah
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFriday\, October 30 at 3 p.m. \nTovah Feldshuh has been a major Broadway star for more than fifty years\, earning four Tony Award nominations and two Emmy Award nominations\, and has appeared in some 30 films\, most recently starring opposite Dustin Hoffman in “Tuner.” Her numerous television appearances include her current role in the hit Netflix show\, “Nobody Wants This.” She wowed audiences with her portrayal of Israel’s prime minister in the one-woman show “Golda’s Balcony.” But\, as this dazzling documentary reveals\, Tovah is much more than an actress extraordinaire. Her commitment to complex\, intelligent\, and powerful female narratives is legendary. A woman of principle\, a cultural icon\, and a Jewish force to be reckoned with both on and off screen\, Tovah is charming and feisty\, a larger-than-life dynamo who richly deserves to be celebrated. SUMMARY:Boulder Jewish Film Festival: You Had to Be There How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSaturday\, October 31 at 3 p.m. \nSunday\, November 1 at 6:30 p.m. \nIn 1972\, Gilda Radner\, Eugene Levy and Martin Short were among a group of unknown performers who were serendipitously cast in the Toronto production of a far-out hippie musical about Jesus. Not only were these cast members about to become major comedy stars\, but comedy itself was about to be radically transformed by Second City and Saturday Night Live\, which tickled the fancy of young audiences eager for a new\, outrageous\, improvisational style of humor. A delightful documentary about comedy\, “You Had to Be There” also explores the cultural phenomenon of “Godspell\,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz\, featuring Jesus as a clown and his disciples as flower children\, with no real plot and a script drawn almost exclusively from the Book of Matthew. The clever cavorting\, miming and antics of the very funny people cast in the oddball musical made it a surprise hit. Come prepared to laugh as we open a comedy time capsule sealed for more than fifty years. \nDocumentary/98 minutes/In English/2025 \nDirected by Nick Davis

DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nBuilt and run by three generations of trailblazing women\, the Catskills’ premier resort became the epicenter of American Jewish life\, an embodiment of Jewish values\, and a breeding ground for a generation of Jewish comics. SUMMARY:Boulder Jewish Film Festival: Reading Lolita in Tehran
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nThis stirring adaptation of Azar Nafisi’s 2003 memoir\, which spent 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list\, is a testament to resilience\, resistance and courage. Acclaimed Israeli director Eran Riklis worked with prominent Iranian actors living in exile to create this exploration of female solidarity in post-Revolutionary Iran. The taut drama chronicles the literature professor’s decision to host a secret book salon in her living room\, where her female students read banned Western classics\, drawing inspiration from the heroines of Nabokov\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Henry James and Jane Austen. As the Islamic regime tightens its grip on intellectual freedom\, this clandestine encounter with transformative stories stokes the ambitions of women enduring misogyny\, censorship and religious extremism. The film takes place over two decades\, starting in 1979\, but could not be more relevant today. “Reading Lolita in Tehran” co-stars Zar Amir Ebrahimi\, who co-directed and co-starred in last year’s Audience Award winner\, “Tatami.” \nFeature/107 minutes/In Farsi/2025 \nDirected by Eran Riklis \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Viva Theater: Birthday Candles | Nov. 6 - 22
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nOver the course of a single evening\, Ernestine Ashworth bakes the same birthday cake\, again and again\, as she grows from age seventeen to one hundred and one. The flames of love ignite\, marriages form and dissolve. Children arrive\, and spin away towards their own destiny. Loss visits\, as it always does. Joy returns\, as it always does. The more candles on the cake\, the more dazzling the light. \nAudiences will recognize themselves in Ernestine at every age—the girl who thinks she’ll change the world\, the woman who wonders if she has\, the elder who finally understands that she already did\, simply by living. Funny\, aching\, and deeply human\, Birthday Candles is a quietly extraordinary meditation on time\, family\, and the divinity hiding in an ordinary life—one candle at a time. \nThe Sunday\, November 8th\, 2:00 PM performance price includes admission to VIVA’s 25TH BIRTHDAY PARTY and Fundraiser in the lobby after the show from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Tickets are $157.50 each. \nTickets are available separately and can be purchased here for the 4:00 PM Party-Fundraiser ONLY (no performance included) at $107.50 each.

SUMMARY:The Human Animal Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Nov 13 – Jan 31 | Opening Reception: Nov 13\, 5 – 8 \nThis exhibition explores how conceptual artists use imagery of animals\, creatures\, and “the other” to reflect on human nature and the breadth of human experience. Through large-scale installations and sweeping conceptual works\, the exhibition examines the symbolic power of the nonhuman as a mirror through which social\, political\, and psychological realities are revealed. \nFocusing on the figure of the animal—and the idea of the “human as other”—the exhibition interrogates themes of aggression\, dominance\, fear\, and control\, questioning the often false or ironic divide drawn between humanity and the natural world. What we project onto animals and imagined creatures frequently exposes our own instincts\, anxieties\, and contradictions\, revealing how closely intertwined human behavior is with the forces we claim to stand apart from. \nServing as a launching point for dialogue around American legacy\, the exhibition opens space for conversation on politics\, history\, and contemporary cultural and social issues. By situating animal imagery within broader conceptual frameworks\, the works challenge viewers to reconsider narratives of power\, violence\, and belonging\, and to reflect on what it means to be human in relation to the world we inhabit. \nParticipating artists: Jessica Teckermeyer\, Michael Brohman\, Tricia Waddel\, Xan McKenna\, Bailey Anderson\, Creative Nations

SUMMARY:RIOT: A Subversive Rock Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nThe world premiere of RIOT includes a 100% femme-identifying cast. Inspired by the subversive genius of Pink Floyd\, particularly in The Wall\, Animals\, and The Dark Side of the Moon\, RIOT takes the spirit of these works into new territory. Through contemporary\, cabaret\, ballet\, physical theatre and satirical language\, RIOT moves the audience through a world shaped by systems of control and toward the question of what it means to reclaim one’s identity and imagine what might come after. \nAt the center of the work is Lavi McConaughey\, Artistic Director\, whose deep love for Pink Floyd’s anarchic roots led to a larger inquiry into power\, sovereignty\, and the collective creation of a different world. Grounded in a belief of the importance of matriarchal values——McConaughey brings these ideas into conversation through music\, movement and theatre. \nIts theatrical world is shaped by an original score composed by Chantil Dukhart\, developed in dialogue with the themes\, movement\, and dramatic architecture of the work. Dukhart performs the score live alongside Halle Tomlinson and Susan Lucia. Together\, performers work together to form an integrated ensemble\, creating a theatrical experience in which music and movement are inseparable. \nChoreographer Christiana Wheeler\, of Corviva Dance Company\, gives the narrative its physical language. Her choreography transforms the work’s political and psychological themes into embodied storytelling\, creating a dialogue between the performers\, musicians\, and audience. \nNot simply a rejection of the system. \nA reckoning with what comes after. \nNOTE: This is a rock concert experience. There will be loud music through the whole show. Strobe lighting may be present. \nTicket Options \nRegular Reserved Seating — $55 \nAdmission with regular seating \nVIP Give Back Reserved — $130 \nIncludes $75 worth of VIP benefits\, the best seats in the house\, and a special swag bag as a thank you for giving back. Your purchase also helps provide a $55 ticket to someone who may not otherwise be able to attend.

SUMMARY:The Upstart Crow Theatre Company: Harvey | Dec. 3 - 13\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nMeet Elwood P. Dowd: a kind\, easygoing gentleman with an unusual best friend. His name is Harvey\, and he happens to be a 6-foot-3½-inch invisible rabbit. \nElwood is perfectly content with this arrangement. His sister\, Veta\, is decidedly not. Desperate to preserve the family’s social standing\, she attempts to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. Instead\, a spectacular misunderstanding sends doctors\, relatives\, and respectable society itself scrambling to decide exactly who belongs on which side of the asylum door. \nMary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy is warm\, witty\, and wonderfully strange\, asking a deceptively simple question: Who gets to decide what “normal” looks like? \nAt its heart\, Harvey is a celebration of friendship\, kindness\, and the possibility that the person everyone thinks has lost touch with reality may understand what matters better than anyone else. \nAfter all\, as Elwood discovers\, you can be oh so smart… or oh so pleasant. \nSpecial Events:\nDec 3 (Thu @ 7:00p) Name-Your-Price Night\nDec 7 (Mon @ 7:00p) – Industry Night\nDec 10 (Thu @ 7:00p) – Name-Your-Price Night

CORE’s Music Director first had the pleasure of working with Ms. Raven when she sang in his early music ensemble at University of Colorado Boulder. This was a decade ago\, and even then\, her remarkable range\, ease and fluidity throughout the voice\, and powerful emotive capabilities revealed a truly unique artist. It is with great pleasure that COmpass REsonance is able to bring Ms. Raven back to Boulder for this fantastic program\, and CORE artists are looking forward to this opportunity to work together!

SUMMARY:COmpass REsonance: JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND PIPES featuring Christopher Holman
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nThis concert takes place at Grace Commons Church: 1820 15th Street\, Boulder\, CO \nPre-concert lecture by the artist: in the Grace Commons Chapel at 6:30PM. \nPerformance: in the Grace Commons Sanctuary at 7:30PM. \nChristopher Holman\, Oxford Scholar and top prize recipient of the Albert Schweitzer International Organ Competition performs a solo recital presented by COmpass REsonance. This program traces the remarkable legacy of the Bach family through works for the organ\, from Johann Sebastian Bach’s dramatic Prelude and Fugue in B Minor to Johann Christian Bach’s playful transcription of Joseph Haydn’s “Imperial” Symphony. Performed on the tracker organ at Grace Commons Church — an entirely mechanical instrument whose keys are directly linked to the pipes — the music speaks with exceptional clarity\, with every nuance of touch shaping the sound. The result is a vivid portrait of a musical family whose influence continues to resonate across centuries. \nProgram:\nSymphony No. 53 in D Major “Imperial” by Joseph Haydn (1732–1809)\, arranged for solo organ by Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782)\nAn Wasserflüssen Babylon\, BWV 653 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)\nSonata in G Major\, Op. 5\, No. 3 by Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782)\nAus der Tiefen rufe ich\, BWV Anh. 745 by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788)\nO Mensch\, bewein dein Sünde groß\, BWV 622 by J.S. Bach\nPrelude and Fugue in B Minor\, BWV 544 by J.S. Bach \nApproximate run time: 65 minutes performed without intermission \nAfter completing extensive graduate musicological and performance work at Basel’s famed Schola Cantorum\, Christopher Holman completed a PhD at Oxford\, where he directed ensembles and served as Lecturer. His solo organ performances have taken him across the planet\, playing historic and modern organs in every context: from basso continuo to the large solo works of Olivier Messiaen at the world’s great cathedrals. Dr. Holman has given lectures at University of Oxford\, Université Sorbonne in Paris\, Eastman School of Music\, and Trinity College Dublin\, and currently serves as Director of Music at St. Gertrude’s Cathedral in Cincinnati. He performed as continuo keyboardist in the 2022 Boulder Bach Festival recording (on the Sono Luminus label) and has collaborated with COmpass REsonance in performances of dozens of composers\, from 1600 onward. \nCORE’s Music Director and Dr. Holman have been friends and colleagues for nearly twenty years\, having performed across the United States together in duo recitals\, chamber music\, and larger ensemble contexts\, on period and modern instruments. CORE is thrilled to offer this lecture and solo recital as the center-point of our 2026/27 season\, with two orchestra concerts preceding it and two following it. This recital in context with the entire season points to CORE’s roots as a Bach festival and ongoing commitment to performance practices across time and cultures\, navigating the waters of music history with Bach as our compass.

SUMMARY:COmpass REsonance: MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE with Vadim Gluzman and CORE
DESCRIPTION:SUBSCRIBE\n TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the world’s most famous violin soloists\, “a musician’s musician\,” Vadim Gluzman returns to perform with COmpass REsonance. The program begins with “Distant Light” Violin Concerto by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks\, a work Gluzman has performed all over the world to great acclaim. It is a significant work that uses modal and tonal building blocks to create something both new and ancient\, a timeless work of power and beauty. Distant Light is aligned with our program’s theme\, Message in a Bottle: the message coming from a distant land beyond the horizon. And what is the message? Across time and cultures we find our shared humanity. \n\nGluzman\, born in Ukraine\, spent his formative years studying the violin in Riga\, Latvia\, before coming to the United States for university studies. His career as one of the world’s top violin soloists includes historically informed Bach\, monumental Romantic and post-Romantic violin concertos\, chamber music\, and a long list of world premieres by living composers. He will lead COmpass REsonance in a world premiere that begins the second half of this concert. After that we head to the 18th Century with a trio sonata by Heinichen\, followed by the great Violin Concerto in E Major by J.S. Bach. \n\nThis program features Gluzman as soloist in two violin concertos\, guest leader of CORE in a new work\, and as chamber music collaborator in a trio sonata\, along with violinist Zachary Carrettin\, cellist Joseph Howe\, and harpsichordist Mina Gajic. \nProgram:\n“Distant Light” Violin Concerto by Peteris Vasks (b. 1946) \nIntermission \nWorld Premiere (new work to be announced) \nTrio Sonata in C Minor\, S258 by Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) \nConcerto for Violin\, Strings\, and Basso Continuo in E Major\, BWV 1042 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) \nApproximate run time: 90 minutes including intermission \nVadim Gluzman is one of the top concert artists in the world today\, appearing as concerto soloist with every great orchestra\, from the New York Philharmonic to the Berlin Philharmonic. One of his many unique qualities is how he approaches the music of J.S. Bach\, using historical bows and an approach to style that is deeply rooted in Baroque performance practice. In 2025\, he recorded The Complete Bach Violin Concertos with COmpass REsonance using period bows and harpsichord\, released on London-based Onyx Classics label. \nThe continued collaboration with Mr. Gluzman has proven to be extremely artistically rewarding for CORE musicians\, and this time\, in addition to performing the work of Bach\, CORE/Gluzman are presenting the world premiere of a new work\, chamber music by Bach contemporary Heinichen\, and the famous “Distant Light” Violin Concerto by Peteris Vasks.
