SUMMARY:Do Donkeys Act?
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 23-27 \n“Burned\, beaten\, abandoned\, donkeys look back at us humans with indifference\, and bray.” this documentary– filmed over 5 years––subtly subverts the notion of the “dumb beast” as it captures donkeys communicating emotionally with each other in the midst of healing from human cruelty and neglect. A poetic text threads through scenes “acted” by donkeys\, a rhythmic script commentary voiced by Willem Dafoe. The ethno-poetic-animal-fiction takes its playfully self-reflexive cues from Jean Rouch and Chris Marker. Encouraging us to respect a major language barrier we might not otherwise consider––the mystery and intrigue of donkey utterances––DO DONKEYS ACT invites us to “step into their shade\, listen closely” as we attune to a series of dramatic performances in which we eavesdrop on donkeys speaking amongst themselves. Reclaiming the donkey from the indignity of a centuries old master slave relationship in which the dominant image of the donkey has been negative (stubborn\, buffoon\, jackass\, laborer\, trickster and fool)\, it elevates a denigrated and degraded beast to the role of lead actor and performance artist. To paraphrase Marina Abramovic\, the donkey is present. (David Redmon & Ashley Sabin\, 2017\, Canada/Ireland\, 1:12\, G)

SUMMARY:The Last First: Winter K2
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nOct 2-4 \nIn partnership with Boulder Environmental\, Nature and Outdoor Film Festival. \nIn “The Last First: Winter K2\,” Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex\, harrowing\, and moving story that takes an unflinching look at the industry of extreme mountain climbing and its changing culture. Focusing on a 2021 expedition\, this documentary follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father-son team of Ali and Sajid Sadpara\, a party of mountaineers who set out to be the first to summit K2 in the winter\, when the mountain’s conditions are the cruelest. The men soon find themselves sharing the treacherous ascent with influencer climbers and their film crews\, commercial expedition clients\, and a Nepalese team no longer content to help Westerners achieve mountaineering glory. “The Last First: Winter K2” takes us to the icy heights and unpredictable weather of K2 and reveals a surprising and layered story—one of strategy and determination\, class and caste\, money and power—all under life-and-death circumstances. SUMMARY:COmpass REsonance: CELLO MONK with Camden Shaw and CORE
DESCRIPTION:SUBSCRIBE\n TICKETS\nCamden Shaw\, cellist of world-renowned Dover Quartet\, joins CORE performing four roles in a single concert—orchestral cellist\, chamber musician\, soloist in an unaccompanied suite\, and concerto soloist. This program compares and contrasts the work of father and son: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1715-1788). It also compares late-Baroque style with early-Classical style\, including the remarkable visceral virtuosity of the orchestra and soloist in CPE Bach’s Cello Concerto in A Minor. \nAdditional soloists in this program include flutist Ysmael Reyes\, a COmpass REsonance member and longtime artist of Boulder Bach Festival’s ensembles. He is joined by guest artist Katy Wherry\, performing as flute soloist with COmpass REsonance for the first time. CORE’s Music Director Zachary Carrettin joins them on violin—performing the much-adored Brandenburg Concerto #4.\nProgram:\nBrandenburg Concerto #4 in G Major\, BWV1049 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)\nCello Suite #6 in D Major\, BWV1012 by J.S. Bach\nIntermission\nTrio Sonata in B Minor\, H567 by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1715-1788)\nConcerto for Cello and Strings in A Minor\, Wq170 by C.P.E. Bach \nApproximate run time: 110 minutes total\, including 20-minute intermission \nCamden Shaw is cellist of the Dover Quartet\, called “one of the greatest quartets in the last 100 years” by BBC Music Magazine. Mr. Shaw has performed ancient and new music in the world’s great concert halls\, including New York’s Carnegie Hall\, London’s Wigmore Hall\, and the Berlin Philharmonie. He was featured in STRAD Magazine’s Masterclass Series\, has presented sought-after content for Tonebase in addition to his own CelloMonk Instagram platform\, and joined the faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2020. \nEvery soloist that collaborates with CORE brings unique artistry\, with each aspect of the collaboration conceived to offer a special experience to Boulder audiences. CORE’s co-directors performed with Mr. Shaw on stages in Texas and California and found his musicianship to be infectious—brilliant\, inspired\, and complete. COmpass REsonance artists are looking forward to this 2026/27 season opening concert! \n\n

SUMMARY:Trains
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nOct 7-11 \nTRAINS is a found-footage documentary composed entirely of archive footage and sound design that creates a collective portrait of people in 20th century Europe\, capturing their hopes\, desires\, dramas and tragedies. A train compartment is a place where people are taken out of their everyday context for a while. Sometimes the journey is accompanied by the hope that something will change in our lives upon reaching the destination\, or conversely\, by a stark absence of hope. And yet the history of the 20th century unfolds in railway carriages in a repetitive refrain. Every few years\, hauntingly similar scenes play out in railway stations around the world: carriages full of men leaving for war\, only to return wounded or as casualties. This cycle is followed by an exodus of civilians\, evacuees mingling with prisoners of war returning from camps\, and soldiers of victorious armies leading the defeated\, until ordinary passengers reappear at stations. SUMMARY:Henhouse Prowlers with Eric Wiggs and Dylan McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nMusic at the Dairy presents Henhouse Prowlers – We Are All Just Human Beings Tour with special guests Eric Wiggs and Dylan McCarthy of Jake Leg \nWith many of their wildest dreams strung across more than two decades together\, the Henhouse Prowlers’ sight remains fixed on the future. Ever constant in the group’s enthralling performances is their ability to showcase their passion for both their craft and our shared humanity. Their latest record\, ‘Unravel\,’ produced by Dark Shadow Recording’s Stephen Mougin (Sam Bush Band) underscores the quartet’s resistance towards being contained\, some tunes expressing a modern Americana feel with others nodding to classic country and bluegrass standards. On this offering\, their trademark four-part harmonies have matured in tone and sincerity\, their picking ferocious as ever. However\, it’s impossible to ensnare the Prowlers’ lifeblood in 45 minutes and 12 tracks. Each member’s skills of storytelling\, compelling songwriting\, and intricate instrumentation shine through their onstage performances. Incorporating an inspiring narrative and bluegrass takes on international tunes from their travels\, their live show will captivate minds and capture hearts. The group’s many life-changing encounters as cultural diplomats across the globe have shaped their worldview and bolstered the bridges they establish between cultures\, a main function of the band. \nhenhouseprowlers.com

SUMMARY:Friday Night Weird: Begotten
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nBegotten has no characters in the ordinary sense. Its final credits name three principal figures: \nGod Killing Himself. \nMother Earth. \nSon of Earth — Flesh on Bone. \nThe entire film is what those names do to each other and to the earth. God Killing Himself tears open his body and dies. Mother Earth rises from what remains and takes his seed into herself. She gives birth to Son of Earth — Flesh on Bone. He is cast into a barren world\, seized by the Nomads\, tortured\, killed\, and briefly returned to life by his mother. The Nomads destroy her too. The Robed Figures gather what remains of mother and son\, grind  their bodies down\, and return them to the soil. The ground flowers. \n“One of the most important films of modern times.”- Susan Sonta (E. Elias Merhige\, 1989\, USA\, 1:12\, NR)
