SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2026: Burn\, Scar
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFilmmaker Hillary Bachelder and Colorado Fire Suppression Professionals will join us for a discussion\nPrescribed fire– the practice of setting small burns to clear ecosystems of overgrowth– is a critical tool for climate resiliency and forest health. But in 2022\, a burn set by the U.S. Forest Service in the mountains of northern New Mexico escaped its firelines and spiraled out of control to become the largest wildfire in the state’s history. Weaving together both sides of the story –  the locals impacted by the fire and struggling to rebuild\, alongside the Forest Service’s efforts to resume stewardship of the land following their tragic misstep – “burn\, scar” is a personal and nuanced story of resilience\, resistance\, and our enduring connection to the land and each other. \nDirected by: Hillary Bachelder | Length: 90 mins

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2026: Melt
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nIn his inimitable way\, Geyrhalter (OUR DAILY BREAD\, HOMO SAPIENS) travels the world of snow and ice. From Japan to the Alps\, Northern Canada to Iceland\, and Antarctica; MELT is the story of people living amid the gradual disappearance of the ice that was once presumed infinite. \nAlong the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Japan\, bulldozers carve out spectacular\, 50-feet-high walls of snow to build corridors specifically to attract tourists\, while the celebrated ski region Val-d’Isère in southern France uses artificial snow to create a winter wonderland. In Switzerland\, snowplows carve furrows into the glaciers to preserve the snow for the coming winter sports season. And in Iceland\, visitors pose in front of gigantic blocks of ice that are gradually being swallowed by the sea. Everything seems normal – but behind the apparently perfect white facade\, the world’s ice and snow are melting at an alarming rate. \nEverywhere Geyrhalter goes\, his subjects talk of melting glaciers and increasingly extreme weather conditions\, revealing how they experience climate change in their everyday lives and work. Filmed between 2021 and 2025\, MELT preserves some of the world’s most compelling frozen landscapes\, addressing some of the greatest environmental and political questions of our age. \n“A meticulous\, contemplative sweep of the globe\, Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s impressive doc takes stock of humanity’s toil to control ice and snow as the climate crisis advances.” \n—Carmen Gray\, The Film Verdict  \n“Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s latest documentary is a fascinating\, unsentimental love letter to snow and icy landscapes.” \n—Susanne Gottlieb\, Cineuropa  \n\nDirected by Nikolaus Geyrhalter  | Runtime: 127 mins

A former associate of the Hell’s Angels\, he sailed into the Sea of Cortez in the 1980s on a boat named Erotica. But while Terry’s friends have great memories of partying with him at sea\, his legacy goes beyond mere popularity. His time on the water transformed Terry\, who devoted his life to the conservation of manta rays after bonding with a giant manta he named “Willy Wow.” Over 19 years off the coast of San Benedicto Island\, Terry and Willy Wow developed an extraordinary relationship that changed our understanding of mantas forever. \nNow in his eighties\, Terry goes on the adventure of a lifetime in The Last Dive\, setting sail with his friends and a documentary crew in hopes of fulfilling his “dying wish” to swim with Willy Wow one more time. Director Cody Sheehy takes viewers along on their journey\, using Terry’s story as a window into the developing science behind manta rays’ extraordinary intelligence\, as well as the urgent need to protect these “gentle giants” and their stunning natural habitat. \nDirected by Cody Sheehy | Runtime: 88 mins

SUMMARY:Dead Souls
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJuly 22-25 \nFor his directorial swan song\, Alex Cox (Repo Man\, Straight To Hell) stars in this frontier fable of American greed. Follow mysterious drifter ‘Strindler’ as he scours the West for the names of dead Mexican labourers. Here at this border town in 1890\, Strindler – or is it ‘Swindler’? – raises eyebrows when he offers to pay a pretty penny to add to his list of names. Wandering affably from saloon to ranch\, Strindler exercises the old adage that money talks – but sometimes too loudly. Between the town drunk\, hot-headed cowherds and local outlaws\, Strindler soon finds himself tangled up in his own tall tales. A meditative\, sincere landscape at the borderlands of the American nightmare: where fortunes rest on a dirty deal\, and legacies are built on blood and gold. (Alex Cox\, 2025\, USA\, 1:28. NR) \n

SUMMARY:Set the Table: Immersive Dinner & Art Retreat
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nThe Set the Table exhibition brings together food\, art\, home\, and community\, exploring how the table serves as a universal locus for culture\, environment\, and the many ways we come together over food. \nThe Dairy Arts Center brings this exhibition to life with a very special event: Set the Table: Immersive Dinner and Art Retreat. On July 22\, guests are invited to an intimate farm-to-table dinner surrounded by the artworks of Set the Table\, where dining becomes a creative\, multi-sensory experience. \nThe evening will feature a beautifully crafted five-course meal by Forage Sisters\, a local\, women-owned farm-to-table catering company. Their menu offers a culinary journey through Colorado’s diverse peoples\, places\, and histories\, with each dish rooted in seasonal ingredients\, sustainable practices\, and the rich narratives embedded in the region’s foodways. \nThroughout the evening\, Boulder-based artist and founder of Schoolhouse Studios\, Kristen Abbott will guide guests through a mini artist retreat. Through a series of hands-on\, creative activities woven into the rhythm of the meal\, participants are invited to reflect\, play\, and embrace Abbott’s philosophy of “joyful experimentation.” \nThe tablescape itself is part of the experience—a feast for the senses that blurs the boundaries between installation\, performance\, and communal dining. An evening where the act of gathering becomes an artwork in itself. \nIncludes a five-course dinner\, one drink\, and all artist-led activities and materials. Bar will be available. \nMenu to be announced soon. Capacity is limited to 40 guests—reserve your spot for this special one-night experience. \nAbout Set the Table Exhibition:\nThe Set the Table exhibition\, at the Dairy Arts Center from the 15th of May to the 2nd of August\, explores the table as a site of connection—where food\, art\, and community intersect. Bringing together artists working across disciplines\, the exhibition considers how the table is a locus point of culture\, and how shared meals carry histories\, shape identities\, and reflect our relationships to the environment\, heritage\, and one another. \nAbout Forage Sisters:\nForage Sisters is a full service event and farm-to-table catering company\, born between two best friends whose passion lies in bringing people together through intentional food and thoughtful events. \nAbout Kristen Abbott:\nKristen Abbott is a mixed media painter and textile artist based in Boulder\, Colorado. Her practice moves between abstract painting and cyanotype textiles\, shaped through an experimental\, process-driven approach. \nIn her cyanotype work\, sunlight acts as both collaborator and catalyst\, imprinting organic forms onto hand-coated fabrics such as linen\, cotton\, and silk. Abbott often reworks these surfaces with additional materials\, building layered compositions that shift with the viewer’s perspective and gradually reveal new details over time. \nGuided by a philosophy of “joyful experimentation\,” her work embraces unpredictability and reflects an intuitive dialogue with place\, light\, and material—inviting viewers into quiet moments of reflection and discovery.

SUMMARY:The Levys of Monticello
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJuly 28 \nIn celebration of America at 250\, the Boulder JCC presents two films illuminating Jewish contributions to our new nation’s history. \nJoin Boulder Jewish Film Festival founding director Kathryn Bernheimer and guests to view and discuss two festival favorites that shed light on unfamiliar chapters of American history. \n  \n“The Levys of Monticello\,” which offers an unusual take on Thomas Jefferson\, screens at 1 pm. “Jews of the Wild West\,” which coincides with Colorado’s 150th year as a state\, will be shown at 3 pm\, with guest speaker Dee Dee Diamond.   \n  \n“The Levys of Monticello” tells the little-known story of the Levy family\, which owned and carefully preserved Monticello for nearly a century – far longer than Jefferson or his descendants. The acclaimed documentary weaves together the remarkable story of the Levy family with an examination of Thomas Jefferson’s legacy\, also touching on still relevant issues of race\, slavery\, and antisemitism. SUMMARY:Jews of the Wild West
\n  \n“Jews of the Wild West\,” which coincides with Colorado’s 150th year as a state\, will be shown at 3 pm\, with guest speaker Dee Dee Diamond. “The Levys of Monticello\,” which offers an unusual take on Thomas Jefferson\, screens at 1 pm.  \n  \n“Jews of the Wild West” highlights the contributions Jewish Americans made in shaping the Western United States. The story of Jewish pioneers who played a definitive role shaping the expansion of the United States has been largely forgotten. But by 1912\, it is estimated that more than 100\,000 Jewish immigrants\, many fleeing persecution in Europe or simply seeking greater personal and economic freedom\, had put down roots in the Wild West\, leaving a lasting imprint on the cultural landscape. (Directed by Denver’s Amanda Kinsey. Running time: 83 minutes. 2022) \n  \nGuest Speaker: Boulder’s Dee Dee Diamond is the great\, great grandniece of Solomon Bibo\, one of the pioneers showcased in the film. Dee Dee traces her family’s fascinating journey from Prussia to America back to 1812\, when great\, great\, great-grandfather Lukas Rosenstein first emigrated to escape conscription in Napoleon’s army. \n

SUMMARY:Mary Oliver: Saved By the Beauty of the World
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJuly 29 – Aug 1 \nIf poetry had a pop icon\, Mary Oliver would be it. Celebrated best-selling poet\, Pulitzer Prize-winner\, lover of dogs and long walks in the woods\, openly queer but intensely private\, Oliver was America’s unlikely contemporary mystic\, stalking the ponds and forests of Cape Cod for nearly fifty years in order to open herself – and her readers – to the known and unknowable world. From a lonely childhood to literary fame\, Oliver’s life was shaped by devotion to nature\, paying attention\, and the long journey toward learning to love and to be loved. Her poems inspire liberals and conservatives\, atheists and believers\, naturalists and urbanites\, speaking directly to contemporary anxieties about attention\, presence\, and the human relationship with the natural world – issues that feel especially pressing in an era of climate crisis\, digital distraction\, and social fragmentation.  \nFeaturing interviews with her close friends\, including John Waters\, never-before-seen personal photos\, notebooks\, and correspondence from her archive\, and recitations of her work by Stephen Colbert\, Lucy Dacus\, Steve Buscemi\, and Oprah Winfrey\, Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World considers the poet’s long lifetime of work in context\, capturing the uniqueness of her world and the natural beauty that inspired her. SUMMARY:Off the Page Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On View Aug 14 – Nov 1 | Opening Reception: Aug 14\, 5 – 8 \nThis group exhibition explores how contemporary artists engage with the written word\, literature\, media\, and storytelling\, examining language as both subject and material. Through practices spanning photography\, sculpture\, installation\, and mixed media\, the exhibition asks: What does the word mean today\, and how are artists using language as a creative tool\, a source of inspiration\, or a physical presence within their work? \nThe exhibition considers the power of words to shape identity\, transmit knowledge\, and build community\, while also reflecting on the evolving role of language in a media-saturated world. It highlights the importance of literature\, freedom of expression\, and storytelling as vital forces that connect people across generations\, cultures\, and backgrounds. \nAccompanying the exhibition is a rich slate of educational and public programming\, developed in partnership with local libraries\, the school district\, and the University of Colorado. Programming will include author talks\, workshops\, and collaborative initiatives with nonprofit organizations focused on literacy and reading\, creating multiple entry points for audiences of all ages to engage with language\, ideas\, and creative expression. \nParticipating artists: Mariel Reed\, Nathan Storey Freeman\, Bug\, Josh Hughes\, Dagny Chika\, Dawn Siebel\, Leona Lazar\, Sarah Tenney\, Samuel Austin\, Lisa Berley\, Jacqueline Moulton\, Austin Baskett\, and Russell Schnell.

SUMMARY:Open Studios presents The Women's Cut
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nHAPPY HOUR 5:30 PM | SCREENING 7:00 PM \nThe Women’s Cut is a celebration of community\, film\, and bold women in even bolder spaces. Join us for a program of six inspiring films from local filmmakers featuring women doing amazing things in the Colorado outdoors. From desert tower ascents to river runs\, each film captures the grit\, grace\, and joy of women who call Colorado’s wild places home. \nThe night will conclude with the final film featuring the premiere of Bridger Janes\, where we are introduced to four women who undertake an ambitious highline project that none could accomplish alone. Through vulnerability and shared vision\, they discover what becomes possible when trust precedes familiarity. \nJoin us for the after party at Vision Quest Brewery for live music and good company — because the best stories always continue off-screen.
