In this intimate\, onstage conversation\, composer Scott Ordway and cellist Josh Halpern\, Artistic Director of the Cultural Caravan will explore the creative process behind Scott’s new composition Letters to My Daughters\, the Cultural Caravan’s first-ever commissioned work. \nWritten as a series of musical and textual reflections to his young daughters\, Letters to My Daughters responds to the political\, environmental\, and social uncertainty of our time. It asks how we speak to the next generation about the future they’re inheriting—and how music can hold space for both personal reflection and broader cultural questions. \nAbout Scott Ordway:\nScott Ordway is a Philadelphia-based composer and multimedia artist whose acclaimed work often blends music\, text\, video\, and photography to explore themes of ecology\, philosophy\, and the American West. His compositions have been performed at Lincoln Center\, Wigmore Hall\, and the Aspen Music Festival by artists and ensembles including Sasha Cooke\, Roomful of Teeth\, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. In addition to his creative work\, he serves as Associate Professor of Music and Head of Composition at Rutgers University. \nJosh met Scott in 2022 while recording his album The Outer Edge of Youth and was immediately struck by the sonorous beauty of his music and its ability to convey powerful stories. Scott’s wide-ranging interests—from rock music to photography to climate issues—inform a musical voice that audiences will find relatable\, engaging\, and thought-provoking. \nFrom Scott: \n“I am drawn to Josh’s expansive and inspiring vision of what a concert series can be\, and the uncommonly deep relationship he envisions between composer\, performer\, and audience. The Go West exhibition showcases a diverse group of AAPI artists whose experiences of diaspora and cross-cultural identity have framed their concept of home\, belonging\, and self-expression. With mediums ranging from metalsmithing and 3D printing to printmaking and photography\, the Go West exhibition features a myriad of powerful artworks that carve out room for new narratives to emerge in the ongoing legacy of the American West. \nThe panel will dive into the artists’ creative processes\, the significance of their work\, and their engagement with themes central to Go West. We will discuss the current trends of the publishing industry\, look at examples of successful queries\, and workshop our own submission materials for immediate and helpful feedback. All genres welcome\, sharing is completely voluntary. \nInstructor: Loie Rawding\nLoie Rawding is the author of the hybrid novel\, Tight Little Vocal Cords (KERNPUNKT)\, a Finalist for the Big Other Book Awards and one of Lambda Literary’s Most Anticipated Books of 2020. She is an editor\, creative mentor\, and teaching artist with The Porch Writers Collective among other arts organizations. Loie grew up on an island off the coast of Maine. She studied theater in Boston and worked in publishing in New York\, before earning an MFA at the University of Colorado. SUMMARY:VIVA Theater: Our Town
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nOur Town has been described by writer Edward Albee as “…the greatest American play ever written.” First performed in 1938\, the play has gone on to numerous revivals on Broadway and countless productions in theaters large and small around the world. Our Town won the Pulitzer Prize for its author\, Thornton Wilder. \nThe story follows characters in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners\, New Hampshire\, through events such as “Daily Life”\, “Love & Marriage”\, and “Death and Eternity”. The staging is famously minimal\, and the action is narrated by a person known only as the Stage Manager. The deceptively simple structure of Our Town veils the profound question at its heart: What is it like to be a human being during our short time on Earth?\nMoving\, universal\, and complex\, the play reminds us of our shared humanity.
