SUMMARY:Matter Over Mind Visual Arts Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception for the Matter Over Mind exhibition. Be the first to see the art and a chance to meet the artist. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available for purchase. \nExhibit On View: 11 July – 31 August\, 2025\nArtists: ATLAS Institute’s Emergent Nanomaterials Lab (Joshua Coffie\, Meenakshi Skandarajan\, Caitlin Rogers\, and Alexandra Felderman)\, Ana González Baragan\, Andrea Garcia Vasquez\, Anna Tsouhlarakis\, Belgin Yucelen\, Carson Besser\, Heather Schulte\, Netta Ofer\, Steven Frost\nMatter Over Mind is an exhibition that explores multidisciplinary innovation\, boundary-pushing research\, and the brilliant\, experimental space where art and science collide. Learn how creative practices are redefining our relationship with the physical world — using matter as a tool to rethink\, reimagine\, and reshape how we live\, learn\, and create. \nThe exhibition brings together a vibrant community of radical thinkers and hands-on makers — artists who are also researchers\, inventors\, teachers\, and students. Many of the exhibiting artists are affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder and its ATLAS Institute\, an interdisciplinary hub for creativity and invention\, where bold ideas come to life through hands-on experimentation\, collaboration\, and critical inquiry. \nFrom the ATLAS Institute’s Emergent Nanomaterials Lab — where Joshua Coffie\, Meenaksi Skandarajan\, Caitlin Rogers\, and Alexandra Felderman develop smart tattoo inks for the human body — to Netta Ofer’s slime mold experiments exploring nonhuman intelligence\, to Ana González Barragán’s transformation of discarded Colorado quarry stone into poetic interventions\, each artist pushes material to its edge and invites us to think differently. \nRather than “mind over matter“\, this exhibition proposes the reverse: Matter Over Mind — a celebration of those who think unconventionally\, experiment boldly\, and let the material world lead the way toward new possibilities. \n

SUMMARY:When Fall Is Coming
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 2-6 \nAfter a tumultuous life in Paris\, Michelle (Hélène Vincent) has retired to a quiet existence in Burgundy\, tending her garden and attending services at her parish. The voracious hostility of her adult daughter Valérie (Ludivine Sagnier) remains Michelle’s great puzzlement: how can a child for whom she sacrificed so much treat her with such contempt and suspicion? When Valérie drops off her son for a week with his grandmother\, Michelle sees an opportunity to repair the relationship\, but a culinary accident soon undercuts whatever trust remains. With the help of her best friend Marie Claude (Josiane Balasko)\, whose son (Pierre Lottin) has recently been released from prison\, Michelle plots a path towards restoring the family life so long denied her. With a deceptively placid surface\, master stylist François Ozon cooks up a twisty and destabilizing thriller where family ties remain the most mysterious ingredient of all. SUMMARY:Secret Mall Apartment
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 2-6 \nIn 2003\, eight Rhode Island artists created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived there for four years\, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture\, tapped into the mall’s electricity\, and even constructed a wall\, smuggling in more than two tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank\, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants. It was a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification\, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art\, a clubhouse in which large-scale charitable art projects were planned\, and\, finally\, a 750 square-foot “F you” to The Man. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the space and revealing the identities of all the participants for the first time\, SECRET MALL APARTMENT is more than just a bonkers true story. Director Jeremy Workman (Lily Topples The World\, The World Before Your Feet\, Deciding Vote) delivers a poignant exploration of a group of artists who discovered their purpose within the most commercial and improbable places. SUMMARY:No Other Land
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nPresented by Boulder Nablus Sister City Project\, and Boulder Showing up for Racial Justice. \nOscar‑winning feature documentary. For half a decade\, Basel Adra\, a Palestinian activist\, films his community of Masafer Yatta being destroyed by Israel’s occupation\, as he builds an unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist who wants to join his fight. “Given the conditions of its production\, NO OTHER LAND would be vital even in a more ragged form. But the filmmaking here is tight and considered\, with nimble editing (by the directors themselves) that captures the sense of time at once passing and looping back on itself.” – Guy Lodge\, Variety (Yuval Abraham\, Basel Adra\, Hamdan Ballal\, Rachel Szor\, 2024\, Occupied Palestinian Territory\, 1:32\, NR)

SUMMARY:Bank Job
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJune 25-29 \nArtist/filmmaker team Dan Edelstyn and Hilary Powell live in an area plagued by debt – mortgage debt\, credit card debt\, public debt – which impoverishes families\, communities and public services. So they recruit their neighbors to set up a bank in their High Street to print their own currency which they then sell as art works. The plan is to raise money to support the local school and community projects and\, more daringly\, to buy up over $1 million of the debts of local people. These debts are being sold on the market for a small fraction of their face value. \nBANK JOB follows Dan and Hilary as they succeed in their aim\, eventually (and spectacularly) blowing up the debt in the shadow of London’s financial district. Along the way\, they meet with economists\, politicians and anti-debt campaigners in America (including the late anthropologist David Graeber) to discover how debt is created in our economy and ask important questions about how the system of money creation might be altered in society’s favor…not just to the banking system’s benefit. \nWith wit\, insight\, and gunpowder\, BANK JOB argues that these debts are a result of a monetary system which is impoverishing multitudes by design\, and which could be changed. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nThe Elusive Quest for Salvation\, a culmination of the lectures on love and freedom\, looks to Derrick Bell as a paradigm for creating space ripe for future making. Offering counterstories that question what salvation means\, think through different contours of salvation\, and explore how we may arrive at salvation\, this lecture invites a kind of speculation and imagining that sustains our responsibility to\, as the spiritual says\, ‘see what the end will be.’ \nThis event is part of the Juneteenth Lecture Series with Dr. Danielle Hodge. Each of these lectures invoke African American legal scholar Derrick Bell’s seminal\ncontribution\, And We Are Not Saved: The Elusive Quest for Racial Justice\, by situating love\, freedom\, and salvation as perpetually evasive though necessary in our struggle for liberation. Click here to learn more about the other lectures in the series.\nOrganized by: CU DialoguesCo-Sponsored by: Finance and Business Strategy\, The Center for African and African American Studies\, The College of Media\, Communication\, & Information\, The Department of Communication\, The Center for Teaching and Learning\, The School of Education\, The Dairy Arts Center\, A&S Office for Access & Community Engagement\, and Infrastructure & Resilience Opportunity for Change Committee.

SUMMARY:Slay the Runway- Designing Safe Spaces for Self Expression
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nSlay the Runway is a Firehouse Art Center Fashion Design program offered at no cost to LGBTQIA+ youth and Youth allies to support self expression. Our goal is to be a safe space for teens to explore their own true style in a Gender Expansive and supportive community. \nWith cohorts in Longmont and Boulder\, instructors start with simple projects that improve student sewing and design skills. As confidence builds\, students are challenged to develop their own self identity as they create an outfit for the showcase. At the fashion show\, students unveil something they’ve created in their style and voice while surrounded by a community sharing their life experience. In addition to garment construction and design\, participants will work with make-up artists and choreographers to refine their debuts. While there are fashion camps and sewing classes in the area\, no other local offerings address the issue of safe spaces for gender-expansive youth with this depth of creativity\, and it is the only program that is no cost to participants. \nSlay the Runway’s goal is to create an affirming and accessible space where creativity\, expression\, and positive self-image are celebrated. Involving parents\, youths\, artists\, the LGBTQIA+ community and educators\, we strive to provide access to peer connection\, parent education\, and safe spaces. \nThis program is made possible by SCFD\, the City of Longmont\, OASOS\, CU Boulder\, your donations\, and the never ending enthusiasm and passion of the Slay Team!

SUMMARY:Beethoven's Nine: Ode to Humanity
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJune 11-15 \nIn early 2023\, filmmaker Larry Weinstein sets out to make a documentary about Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It is supposed to be about how far we have come in the two hundred years since it was written. But when world events pull Larry into his own film\, the question becomes a deeply personal one. This is a documentary about music\, but also about war and hope. It follows nine unique individuals\, including Ukrainian musicians\, a deaf composer\, a Polish rock star\, a best-selling author\, a legendary cartoonist and Weinstein himself\, as they try to better understand the legacy of Beethoven’s Ninth\, the composer’s own struggles\, the inspiration music can provide\, and how humanity continues to look for hope even in the darkest times.
