SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: OCEAN with David Attenborough
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nManny Almonte\, our 2025 EARTH ANGEL HONOREE \n\n\n\n\nPrior to Closing Night film\, the festival will honor Manny Almonte with the festival’s EARTH ANGEL statuette for his work in environmental advocacy and education. \nGrowing up in the bustling city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic\, Almonte sought peace and freedom during weekend\, holiday\, and summer visits to his father’s home in Bonao\, an inland town at the foothills of the Pico Duarte mountains. “I was able to experience nature beyond the beach. Usually you think of the Caribbean Sea and how beautiful the beaches are\, but when you go into the land\, you find beautiful mountains\, streams\, and wildlife—and that is something that I always looked forward to\,” said Almonte. “I didn’t experience nature intentionally; it was simply life.” \nToday\, Almonte shares that way of life with young Black and Brown men from New York City and Denver and uses it as a vehicle to help them create connections with nature\, their passions\, their inner selves and their communities through his non-profit organization Young Masterminds Initiative and its Camping to Connect outdoor mentorship program. \nManny lives in Denver\, Colorado. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOCEAN with DAVID ATTENBOROUGH\, Biologist and host \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer >\n“Ocean is by turns awe-inspiring\, informative\, deeply angering and cautiously hopeful.” – Radio Times \nOCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH takes viewers on a breathtaking journey showing there is nowhere more vital for our survival\, more full of life\, wonder\, or surprise\, than the  ocean.\nThe celebrated broadcaster and filmmaker reveals how his lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. Through spectacular sequences featuring coral reefs\, kelp forests and the open ocean\, Attenborough shares why a healthy ocean keeps the entire planet stable and flourishing. \nStunning\, immersive cinematography showcases the wonder of life under the seas and exposes the realities and challenges facing our ocean as never-before-seen\, from destructive fishing techniques to mass coral reef bleaching. Yet the story is one of optimism\, with Attenborough pointing to inspirational stories from around the world to deliver his greatest message: the ocean can recover to a glory beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen. \nFollowing the film\, exclusively in cinemas\, A DEEPER DIVE WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH takes audiences behind the scenes with additional footage and interviews on the making of OCEAN. \nDirected by Colin Butfield\, Toby Nowlan\, Keith Scholey \nRuntime: 95 mins

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: How To Power A City
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\nWatch the trailer >\n\nA “solutions-focused climate story….[that] demonstrates the societal and human health impact that climate justice action — in this case\, renewable energy — can have on individuals and communities.” — kawarthaNOW.com / ReFrame Film Festival \n“An unprecedented glimpse into the material steps being taken to improve the energy economy for those curious about green investment and renewable energy redevelopment.” —Evan Robins\, Arthur Press \n“Watch it and give your sense of possibility a much-needed boost!”— Randall Amster\, Georgetown University \nFrom zeitgeist clean energy projects and early solar adopters to investors trying to bolster local economies with clean energy\, to environmental justice communities fighting to keep the lights on\, How To Power A City showcases the people leading the way to our nation’s clean energy future. What began as a look at solar and wind power in the large urban sprawls of New York City\, Atlantic City\, Las Vegas\, and Detroit/Highland Park soon expanded to include towns in mountainous Vermont and communities throughout Puerto Rico. This allows the film to subtly explore what it means to be a city and the malleability of developed environments\, no matter the size. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\nWatch the trailer>\n  \nIn 1980 Jay Helgerson shocked the world\, becoming the first person to run a marathon a week for a year – each race completed in under three hours. What she gets are his projected anxieties\, his struggles with physical age and emotional distress\, all while he endlessly trains for the Boston Marathon. But as Jay trains\, the film is nearly derailed by Alexandra’s encounter with a life threatening illness. Ultimately\, AGE GROUP WINNER is an affirmation of the will to live. \nDirected by: Alexandra Helgerson \nLength: 83 mins \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFilmmaker Lex Helgerson will join us for a discussion \n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Helgerson has worked as a filmmaker\, actor\, teacher and musician. After working in publishing at Town&Country Magazine in New York\, she began a career in acting. Notable roles include Viola and Rosaline for the American Shakespeare Center\, Vivien in VIVIEN\, and Brynn in HAPPY ENDING\, a horror-comedy to be released for streaming and video on demand by Buffalo 8 on June 27th. SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: Half-Life of Memory: America's Forgotten Atomic Bomb Factory
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\nWatch the Trailer >\nIn the suburbs of Denver\, the U.S. secretly manufactured thousands of atomic weapons\, leaving behind a toxic legacy that will persist for generations. \nThe Rocky Flats plant produced a staggering 70\,000 atomic bombs\, each serving as a “trigger” for thermonuclear warheads. Concealed by government secrecy\, the plant’s fires\, leaks\, and illicit dumping of nuclear waste contaminated the Denver area with long-lived radioactive toxins. \nA major—and highly visible—plutonium fire sparked a decade of mass protests\, culminating in an unprecedented FBI raid that ultimately shuttered the plant. Today\, the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats continues to threaten public health\, yet surprisingly few people are aware the plant ever existed. \nThrough powerful testimonials and extraordinary archival media\, Half-Life of Memory exposes Rocky Flats’ dark past and enduring impact\, prompting critical reflection on the implications of the nation’s renewed nuclear weapons buildup. \nDirected by Jeffrey Gipe \nRuntime: 55 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeffrey GIPE\, Director’s Statement \n\n\n\n\nAs the director of Half-Life of Memory\, I am honored to share this film\, which explores the complex and contested legacy of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant. This project is profoundly personal to me\, as my father is among those who worked at Rocky Flats and endured the severe consequences of the nuclear arms race. \nHalf-Life of Memory is not just a film; it is a personal mission to unveil the concealed realities of Rocky Flats and to amplify the voices of those who have been affected. Through meticulous research and heartfelt testimonials\, Half-Life of Memory exposes the lasting impacts of nuclear arms production on individuals and communities. \nWith rising nuclear tensions and a new buildup of nuclear weapons underway\, addressing the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats is more urgent than ever to ensure that lessons from its past are not ignored. \nHalf-Life of Memory stands as a tribute to my father\, to all the workers who sacrificed their well-being\, and to the countless lives impacted by nuclear weapons production. It is my hope that this film will honor their stories and serve as a catalyst for meaningful

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: Lost Wolves of Yellowstone
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nTHE LOST WOLVES OF YELLOWSTONE\nA captivating film from Yellowstone National Park\, where a group of biologists led by a charismatic woman set out to bring back the wolves – a project that changed their own lives forever. \nThe wolf holds a special place in the animal kingdom. The proud and feared predator is almost a mythological creature in the story of humanity’s own history. So when the decision was made in 1995 to reintroduce the wolf to the vast Yellowstone National Park\, it was not without opposition. \nLeading the project was charismatic biologist Mollie Beattie\, who\, along with her colorful and sympathetic team of colleagues\, was charged with bringing wolves back at a time when they had been extinct for 50 years. But not everyone was thrilled with the idea that wolves would soon be allowed to roam free again. The project became a political battle that required all of Beattie’s skills as a biologist\, diplomat and storyteller. \nThe documentary ‘Lost Wolves of Yellowstone’ unfolds this magnificent story as an epic drama with a twinkle in the eye – not least from Beattie’s idealistic and charming colleagues\, who experience the amazing and beautiful footage from back then for the first time. This event is in collaboration with the Rocky Mountains Wolf Project.

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: The American Southwest
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\n\nProducer Dr. Len Necefer will join us afterwards for a discussion\nThe American Southwest is a thrilling wildlife movie that chronicles life and death along the Colorado River…and advocates for its return. \nThe feature-length film follows the Colorado River from its headwaters in the Rocky Mountains\, through lush forests and iconic canyons\, and down diversion tunnels and irrigation canals on its 1\,400-mile journey to sustain both the natural world and humanity. Along the way\, the river nourishes diverse ecosystems that are bursting with life\, and provides water to more than 40 million people. From the recovery of elk and beavers to the endangerment of cutthroat trout and jaguars\, the movie showcases wildlife stories that speak to our society’s ability to both destroy and recover the natural world. \nNarrated by Quannah ChasingHorse\, The American Southwest is set to be the first-ever blue chip natural history film narrated by an Indigenous voice. Through collaboration with Natives Outdoors\, the film also features incredible artwork\, architecture\, and culture of Indigenous peoples who have lived in relative harmony with the region for over one thousand generations. \nWith a changing climate\, rapidly growing population\, and continuous over-allocation of the world’s most litigated river\, there has never been a more important time to inspire conservation efforts that ensure wildlife\, rivers\, and humans thrive. The American Southwest aims to foster a love for the region\, ignite hope for conservation success\, encourage action to return healthy river flows\, and raise awareness before the Colorado River Compact is renegotiated in 2026. \nDirected by Ben Masters \nRuntime: 102 mins \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProducer Dr. Len Necefer \n\n\n\n\nDr. Len Necefer is the CEO & Founder of NativesOutdoors\, a media and consulting company focused on environmental advocacy\, outdoor recreation\, and sustainability. Writer-director Sarah Friedland’s coming-of-old-age feature compassionately follows the winding path of octogenarian Ruth’s shifting memories and desires while remaining rooted in her sage perspective. SUMMARY:Classics with Jeffrey Kash: The Facts of Life
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 14\nUnlike the typical Bob Hope and Lucille Ball vehicles\, The Facts of Life is essentially a domestic drama with comic undertones. Hope is married to Ruth Hussey\, while Ball is the wife of Don DeFore. All four are old friends\, who for many years have taken each other for granted. A series of unforeseen circumstances requires Hope and Ball to spend a great deal of time together without their spouses\, and as a result they fall in love. Though the affair is never consummated\, Hope and Ball are prepared to run off together\, but in the end they decide that adultery at their age just isn’t worth the trouble. Long unavailable for viewing due to legal tangles\, The Facts of Life has gained legendary status as one of the few Bob Hope films of the 1960s to concentrate on character development rather than silly one-liners. Recent viewings have revealed that\, though a far more mature work than one might expect from Hope or Ball\, Facts of Life still relies to a great extent on the sort of TV sitcom material that the fans of the two stars had come to expect by 1960. Still\, the film was considered offbeat enough to warrant an Oscar nomination for best screenplay (Melvin Frank\,  1961\, USA\, 1:43\, NR)

SUMMARY:Sabbath Queen
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJuly 9-13 \nCo-presented by the Boulder Jewish Community Center \nShot over 21 years\, it follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s epic journey as the dynastic heir of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis including the Chief Rabbis of Israel. He is torn between accepting his ancestral destiny or following his heart to become a drag queen rebel\, a queer father\, and the founder of Lab/Shul – an everybody-friendly\, experimental congregation. As SABBATH QUEEN opens\, Lau-Lavie is newly arrived in New York in the late 1990s\, a young gay man declaring “Artists are the new rabbis” and appearing around the city in drag as Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross\, the widow of six Hasidic rabbis (all from the same extended family). As the years pass\, Lau-Lavie embraces a range of creative spiritual endeavors including Storahtelling and Lab/Shul – until he shocks everyone with his decision to become a rabbi himself\, studying in the Conservative tradition of Judaism. Director Sandi Dubowski will be present for Q&A at the first two screenings. (Sandi Simcha Dubowski\, 2025\, USA\, 1:45\, NR)

SUMMARY:Matter Over Mind Visual Arts Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception for the Matter Over Mind exhibition. Be the first to see the art and a chance to meet the artist. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available for purchase. \nExhibit On View: 11 July – 31 August\, 2025\nArtists: ATLAS Institute’s Emergent Nanomaterials Lab (Joshua Coffie\, Meenakshi Skandarajan\, Caitlin Rogers\, and Alexandra Felderman)\, Ana González Baragan\, Andrea Garcia Vasquez\, Anna Tsouhlarakis\, Belgin Yucelen\, Carson Besser\, Heather Schulte\, Netta Ofer\, Steven Frost\nMatter Over Mind is an exhibition that explores multidisciplinary innovation\, boundary-pushing research\, and the brilliant\, experimental space where art and science collide. Learn how creative practices are redefining our relationship with the physical world — using matter as a tool to rethink\, reimagine\, and reshape how we live\, learn\, and create. \nThe exhibition brings together a vibrant community of radical thinkers and hands-on makers — artists who are also researchers\, inventors\, teachers\, and students. Many of the exhibiting artists are affiliated with the University of Colorado Boulder and its ATLAS Institute\, an interdisciplinary hub for creativity and invention\, where bold ideas come to life through hands-on experimentation\, collaboration\, and critical inquiry. \nFrom the ATLAS Institute’s Emergent Nanomaterials Lab — where Joshua Coffie\, Meenaksi Skandarajan\, Caitlin Rogers\, and Alexandra Felderman develop smart tattoo inks for the human body — to Netta Ofer’s slime mold experiments exploring nonhuman intelligence\, to Ana González Barragán’s transformation of discarded Colorado quarry stone into poetic interventions\, each artist pushes material to its edge and invites us to think differently. \nRather than “mind over matter“\, this exhibition proposes the reverse: Matter Over Mind — a celebration of those who think unconventionally\, experiment boldly\, and let the material world lead the way toward new possibilities. \n

SUMMARY:When Fall Is Coming
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 2-6 \nAfter a tumultuous life in Paris\, Michelle (Hélène Vincent) has retired to a quiet existence in Burgundy\, tending her garden and attending services at her parish. The voracious hostility of her adult daughter Valérie (Ludivine Sagnier) remains Michelle’s great puzzlement: how can a child for whom she sacrificed so much treat her with such contempt and suspicion? When Valérie drops off her son for a week with his grandmother\, Michelle sees an opportunity to repair the relationship\, but a culinary accident soon undercuts whatever trust remains. With the help of her best friend Marie Claude (Josiane Balasko)\, whose son (Pierre Lottin) has recently been released from prison\, Michelle plots a path towards restoring the family life so long denied her. With a deceptively placid surface\, master stylist François Ozon cooks up a twisty and destabilizing thriller where family ties remain the most mysterious ingredient of all. SUMMARY:Secret Mall Apartment
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \nJuly 2-6 \nIn 2003\, eight Rhode Island artists created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived there for four years\, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture\, tapped into the mall’s electricity\, and even constructed a wall\, smuggling in more than two tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank\, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants. It was a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification\, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art\, a clubhouse in which large-scale charitable art projects were planned\, and\, finally\, a 750 square-foot “F you” to The Man. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the space and revealing the identities of all the participants for the first time\, SECRET MALL APARTMENT is more than just a bonkers true story. Director Jeremy Workman (Lily Topples The World\, The World Before Your Feet\, Deciding Vote) delivers a poignant exploration of a group of artists who discovered their purpose within the most commercial and improbable places.
