SUMMARY:Friday Night Weird: Exit 8
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJune 12 \nA man trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover an anomaly\, turn back immediately. If you don’t\, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor? (Genki Kawamura\, 2025\, Japan\, 1:35\, NR) \n

SUMMARY:Friday Night Weird: Fiume O Morte!
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJune 5 \nCroatia’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. \nBezinović’s inventive hybrid film is a defiantly punk direct-action history lesson\, deadly serious yet hilariously surreal. In 1919\, the Italian poet\, dandy\, and glorifier of war Gabriele D’Annunzio occupied the city of Fiume.  \nThe citizens of Fiume (now Croatia’s Rijeka) retell and reinterpret the 16-month occupation of their city\, regarded as one of the most bizarre military sieges of all time. Incensed that the city — long part of the now-dissolved Austro-Hungarian Empire\, would be ceded to the newly formed Kingdom of the Serbs\, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) despite its large Italian population — D’Annunzio gathered a few thousand troops and invaded\, intending to annex the city to Italy.  \nItaly wanted no part of this folly\, and after 15 months\, D’Annunzio and his forces retreated. A century later\, Bezinović recruits hundreds of Rijeka locals to recreate scenes from the siege on the streets and in the buildings where events occurred. SUMMARY:Science on Screen®: Like Water for Chocolate Food\, Emotion\, and the Science of Nourishment
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n  \nBefore the screening of Like Water for Chocolate\, Carmen Pacheco will explore how food carries emotion\, memory\, culture\, and identity while also serving as a fascinating lens into science and engineering. Through stories and examples from Mexican cuisine\, chocolate making\, flavor development\, heat transfer\, emulsions\, and sensory science\, the talk will examine how nourishment extends far beyond nutrition and connects deeply to human experience. \n\nThe film shows us that cooking is not only chemistry and heat transfer. Food also carries memory\, culture\, identity\, resistance\, and emotion. Mole\, chocolate\, and salsa become both scientific and human transformations. \nAdditional Details\n\n\nJoin us at 5:30 PM to enjoy the Dairy’s current exhibition\, Set the Table: The Art of Nourishment (open daily from 12 PM) with a limited tasting of fresh salsa and Oaxacan mole provided by Carmen Pacheco.\n6:00 PM Lecture; 7 PM Film Screening.\nFree for Dairy Arts Center Members!\n\n About the Speaker\nCarmen Pacheco is Associate Teaching Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Food Engineering Graduate Certificate at the University of Colorado Boulder. Originally from Sonora\, Mexico\, she combines engineering\, food science\, sustainability\, culture\, and sensory experience through innovative courses such as Design of Coffee and Design of Chocolate. Her work explores how food connects people\, history\, science\, and identity.\nAbout the Film\nWhen tradition prevents her from marrying the man she loves\, a young woman discovers she has a unique talent for cooking.\n(Alfonso Arau\, Mexico\, 1992\, 1:45\, R)

SUMMARY:Amrum | May 20-24
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nIt is the Spring of 1945 on the German island of Amrum\, a remote outpost in the North Sea. The front is far away\, and 12-year-old Nanning (newcomer Jasper Billerbeck) spends his days working the nearby farm and his nights fishing\, helping his mother to feed their family. Despite the hardship\, life on the beautiful\, windswept isle seems idyllic. When their anti-fascist neighbor Tessa (Diane Kruger) mentions to Nanning that the war will soon be over\, the boy – too young to understand the political implications – is pleased to imagine that his father\, a Nazi officer\, might soon be coming home. But his mother Hille (Laura Tonke) is a true believer\, and word of Germany’s imminent defeat sends her into decline. One day from her sick bed\, she wishes for white bread\, butter and honey\, near impossible luxuries on Amrum which Nanning innocently tries to find for her. But as he sets off on his quest\, he learns from his neighbors that the enemy is far closer than he imagined. (Fatih Akin\, 2025\, Germany\, 1:33\, NR) \n\n

SUMMARY:Timestamp | Jan 7-11
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJan 7-11 \nKeeping schools open in Ukraine is an attempt to recreate at least some of the normal life they had before the war — until February 24\, 2022 (and in some regions even earlier\, in 2014). Without interviews\, narration and reenactments\, TIMESTAMP provides an insight into how the war is affecting the daily lives of students and teachers. The film has a mosaic-like structure: it explores how a school functions in-person and online in these terrible times\, both on and off the frontline\, how day-to-day life is intertwined with constant danger. SUMMARY:Souleymane's Story | Jan 1-4
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJan 1-4 \nRacing through the streets of Paris making food deliveries on his bicycle\, Guinean immigrant Souleymane (Sangare) is struggling to stay afloat. In two days\, he has to report for an asylum application interview\, where he must plead his case to an immigration officer (Nina Meurisse) who will determine his future in France. As he rides\, he repeats his story. But Souleymane is not ready. Drawing inspiration from Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months\, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and evoking the humanist films of the Dardennes\, Boris Lojkine’s urgent\, propulsive third feature never leaves Souleymane’s side in a deeply affecting account of the daily trials and uncertain futures faced by migrants in France and around the world.
