SUMMARY:Science on Screen®: Into the Storm The Real Science Behind "Twisters"
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJoin us to celebrate the National Evening of Science on Screen!\nBefore the screening of Twisters (2024)\, Dr. Brian Argrow\, University of Colorado Boulder professor and lead developer of the RAAVEN drone featured in the film\, takes us inside the evolving world of storm chasing. From cutting-edge drone technology to the real risks and rewards of field research\, Dr. Argrow will explore how scientists track severe weather today and how Hollywood’s portrayal stacks up against reality. \nLecture 6:00 PM; Film Screening 7:00 PM \nThis event is FREE for Dairy Arts Center Members as part of the Science on Screen® series \n\nAbout Dr. Brian Argrow \nBRIAN M. ARGROW is Glenn L. Murphy Distinguished Professor of the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences and founding Director of the Integrated Remote & In-Situ Sensing Program (IRISS). His research includes design and deployment of small\, uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS)\, airspace integration\, and aerothermodynamics. He led the first UAS team to intercept supercell thunderstorms. Argrow served as associate dean for education\, department chair\, and is founding director (emeritus) of the Research and Engineering Center for Unmanned Vehicles (RECUV). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a recent member of the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics and was awarded the 2026 AIAA Durand Lectureship for Public Service. He received the Department of the Air Force Exemplary Civilian Service Award for service on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and is a founding board member of the UAS Colorado non-profit business league. \nAbout Twisters\nA retired tornado-chaser and meteorologist is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work\nwith a new team and new technologies. SUMMARY:Science on Screen®: From Arrival to Atoms Thinking Quantum
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFrom the sci-fi world of Arrival to the quantum behavior of atoms\, this interactive discussion with Dr. Heather Lewandowski explores how ideas about information\, uncertainty\, and measurement shape our understanding of the physical universe. \nLecture 6:00 PM; Film Screening 7:00 PM \nThis event is FREE for Dairy Arts Center Members as part of the Science on Screen® series \n\nAbout Dr. Heather Lewandowski\nHeather Lewandowski is a professor of physics and Fellow of JILA at the University of Colorado Boulder. She leads two research programs\, one in experimental molecular physics and the other in physics education research. Her molecular physics research efforts focus on studying interactions and reactions of cold\, chemically important molecules and ions. Her physics education research program studies ways to increase students’ proficiency in experimental scientific practices\, as well as research in quantum science education and workforce development.   She earned her B.S. in physics from Michigan Technological University and her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder. She later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). \n\nAbout Arrival\nTaking place after alien crafts land around the world\, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. SUMMARY:Science on Screen®: Like Water for Chocolate Food\, Emotion\, and the Science of Nourishment
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n  \nBefore the screening of Like Water for Chocolate\, Carmen Pacheco will explore how food carries emotion\, memory\, culture\, and identity while also serving as a fascinating lens into science and engineering. Through stories and examples from Mexican cuisine\, chocolate making\, flavor development\, heat transfer\, emulsions\, and sensory science\, the talk will examine how nourishment extends far beyond nutrition and connects deeply to human experience. \n\nThe film shows us that cooking is not only chemistry and heat transfer. Food also carries memory\, culture\, identity\, resistance\, and emotion. Mole\, chocolate\, and salsa become both scientific and human transformations. \nAdditional Details\n\n\nJoin us at 5:30 PM to enjoy the Dairy’s current exhibition\, Set the Table: The Art of Nourishment (open daily from 12 PM) with a limited tasting of fresh salsa and Oaxacan mole provided by Carmen Pacheco.\n6:00 PM Lecture; 7 PM Film Screening.\nFree for Dairy Arts Center Members!\n\n About the Speaker\nCarmen Pacheco is Associate Teaching Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Food Engineering Graduate Certificate at the University of Colorado Boulder. Originally from Sonora\, Mexico\, she combines engineering\, food science\, sustainability\, culture\, and sensory experience through innovative courses such as Design of Coffee and Design of Chocolate. Her work explores how food connects people\, history\, science\, and identity.\nAbout the Film\nWhen tradition prevents her from marrying the man she loves\, a young woman discovers she has a unique talent for cooking.\n(Alfonso Arau\, Mexico\, 1992\, 1:45\, R)
