SUMMARY:Jack Johnson: SURFILMUSIC | Aug. 27 - 30
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSURFILMUSIC a new documentary chronicling Jack Johnson’s evolution from surfer to filmmaker to world-renowned musician. Directed by Emmett Malloy\, featuring Jack Johnson\, Kelly Slater\, Rob Machado\, Gerry Lopez\, Chris Malloy\, G. Love\, Ben Harper\, John Florence\, Emmett Malloy\, Kim Johnson\, and more\, with a beautiful score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez. (Emmett Malloy\, 2026\, USA 1:15\, NR)

SUMMARY:Underland
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 2-6 \nOscar-nominee Sandra Hüller narrates this cinematic adaptation of Robert Macfarlane’s bestselling book\, UNDERLAND. The documentary voyages into worlds rarely glimpsed by human eyes to explore the world beneath our feet. One not of fear and darkness\, but rather of knowledge and wonder that can be found nowhere else. Beginning in the shallow soils beneath an old ash tree\, we travel alongside several ‘astronauts of the underworld’ into ancient sacred caves\, flooded storm drains\, melting glaciers\, underwater burial chambers and a deep underground laboratory built to solve the mysteries of the Universe. UNDERLAND dives deep into the Earth to present a groundbreaking vision for rethinking our lives on this fragile surface. (Robert Petit\, 2025\, USA/UK\, 1:19\, NR)

SUMMARY:Our Demand: Indigenous land back in Argentina film followed by conversation with director Daniela Seggiaro
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nOur Demand (Senda India 2024)\, by Argentine director Daniela Seggiaro\, tells the story of the Wichí people’s struggle for land rights against the state and the usurpation of their territory by a private company. She is a writer and director\, known for Husek (2021)\, Nosilatiaj. La belleza (2012) and Senda india (2024).

SUMMARY:Late Fame + Talkback
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 9-16 \nThe great Willem Dafoe lends his delicate gravitas to the role of Ed Saxberger\, a forgotten New York poet who works in the post office. After an eager and flattering young admirer (Edmund Donovan) appears on his doorstep\, Saxberger is beckoned into a coterie of twentysomething admirers who anoint him as a rediscovered genius. Intoxicated by the attention—and by the alluring presence of Gloria\, the group’s “tragic heroine” (a sinuous\, Kurt Weill–crooning Greta Lee)—Saxberger gradually reckons with the authenticity of his newfound poetic circle. This thoughtful\, witty second feature from Kent Jones (DIANE)\, working from a sly and hugely entertaining script based on a novella by early 20th century Viennese author\, Arthur Schnitzler. (Kent Jones\, 2026\, USA\, 1:36\, NR) \nTALKBACK: Join us after the film on September 9 for a Talkback with Brian Buckley. Brian is currently the Executive Director of The Southwest Native-American Foundation\, was owner and operator of the much-missed Innisfree Poetry Bookstore and Cafe on the Hill. He now is the Events Manager at Trident Books and Cafe. He is a Harvard graduate\, son of Irish immigrants\, and an educator.

SUMMARY:American Agitators
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 16-20 \nInspired by Fred Ross Sr\, one of the most influential grassroots organizers of the 20th century\, AMERICAN AGITATORS is a documentary about the importance of patience and deep listening in organizing. Beginning in the 1930s\, Ross organized Dust Bowl refugees and during WWII he helped Japanese Americans find jobs and housing after release from the internment camps. After the War\, in the face of KKK activity\, he organized civil unity leagues in California by mentoring Mexican Americans and African Americans to build their voting power to challenge segregation in schools\, which led to a successful integration of local school boards across California’s Citrus Belt.  He worked from the understanding that while protests can draw attention to create sustainable change\, persistence and organization are required to build power and give people a voice in the decisions that shape their living and working conditions. American Agitators\, tells a story of how today\, collective action can combat racism\, bigotry\, and injustice and help move our nation towards a true democracy. (Raymond Telles\, 2024\, USA\, 1:34\, NR) \nThe 7pm screening on Sept 16 will have a Q&A with Executive Producer John Heffernan\nExecutive Producer John Heffernan\, who has over thirty years of experience in leadership roles in human rights\, rule of law\, democracy and governance\, humanitarian relief and post-conflict reconstruction projects in the United States\, Africa\, South America\, Asia and Europe. He has served as executive director of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights’ Speak Truth To Power; director of the Genocide Prevention Initiative at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; senior Investigator with Physicians for Human Rights; chief of party for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs in Guyana\, South America; founder and executive director of the Coalition for International Justice; and country representative for the former Yugoslavia and Sudan for the International Rescue Committee. He was trained as a community organizer by Fred Ross. He serves as the board chair for Disability Rights International and the Educator’s Institute for Human Rights and is on the board of Social Documentary Network.\n\nFor several years\, he has also been a speaker at the CU Conference on World Affairs.

SUMMARY:Do Donkeys Act?
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nSept 23-27 \n“Burned\, beaten\, abandoned\, donkeys look back at us humans with indifference\, and bray.” this documentary– filmed over 5 years––subtly subverts the notion of the “dumb beast” as it captures donkeys communicating emotionally with each other in the midst of healing from human cruelty and neglect. A poetic text threads through scenes “acted” by donkeys\, a rhythmic script commentary voiced by Willem Dafoe. The ethno-poetic-animal-fiction takes its playfully self-reflexive cues from Jean Rouch and Chris Marker. Encouraging us to respect a major language barrier we might not otherwise consider––the mystery and intrigue of donkey utterances––DO DONKEYS ACT invites us to “step into their shade\, listen closely” as we attune to a series of dramatic performances in which we eavesdrop on donkeys speaking amongst themselves. Reclaiming the donkey from the indignity of a centuries old master slave relationship in which the dominant image of the donkey has been negative (stubborn\, buffoon\, jackass\, laborer\, trickster and fool)\, it elevates a denigrated and degraded beast to the role of lead actor and performance artist. To paraphrase Marina Abramovic\, the donkey is present. (David Redmon & Ashley Sabin\, 2017\, Canada/Ireland\, 1:12\, G)

SUMMARY:Friday Night Weird: Begotten
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nBegotten has no characters in the ordinary sense. Its final credits name three principal figures: \nGod Killing Himself. \nMother Earth. \nSon of Earth — Flesh on Bone. \nThe entire film is what those names do to each other and to the earth. God Killing Himself tears open his body and dies. Mother Earth rises from what remains and takes his seed into herself. She gives birth to Son of Earth — Flesh on Bone. He is cast into a barren world\, seized by the Nomads\, tortured\, killed\, and briefly returned to life by his mother. The Nomads destroy her too. The Robed Figures gather what remains of mother and son\, grind  their bodies down\, and return them to the soil. The ground flowers. \n“One of the most important films of modern times.”- Susan Sonta (E. Elias Merhige\, 1989\, USA\, 1:12\, NR)

For nearly a decade before her passing in 2019\, Kelli ran “Girl Internet Show\,” a YouTube channel\, parasocial experiment\, and epically deranged one-woman universe built from scratch in her bedroom. This hand-made mixtape from Jane Schoenbrun (I SAW THE TV GLOW) and Jordan Wippell features a lovingly curated selection of Kelli’s online work\, unreleased videos\, and TOTAL BODY REMOVAL SURGERY—her first (and final) short film opus.
