SUMMARY:Boulder Jewish Film Festival 2025 Art Spiegelman | Disaster Is My Muse
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nThe Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of “Maus” revolutionized comics by exploring dark\, complex themes\, his life and work having been shaped by his Holocaust-survivor parents and inspired by MAD magazine’s irreverent satire. This award-winning portrait of a provocative and influential artist features archival footage and illustrations\, recent interviews with Spiegelman\, and interviews with his family and contemporaries\, including fellow cartoonists Joe Sacco\, Robert Crumb\, Emil Ferris\, Jerry Craft and Bill Griffith. \nThis fascinating new documentary follows Spiegelman’s early career as co-editor of comic magazines Arcade and Raw before becoming a contributing artist for The New Yorker\, as well as the origins and impact of Maus\, his autobiographical work that became the first and only graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize. Although Maus has been widely praised as teaching tool for students studying the Holocaust\, the graphic novel recently generated controversy when a Tennessee school board removed it from its 8th grade curriculum. A defender of free speech and a candid cultural critic\, Spiegelman continues to speak out against censorship. \nJoin us for a Talkback after the film with Jim Vacca:\nJim Vacca is a retired teacher and a local comics enthusiast who most recently taught a class on Comic Books and the Jewish Imagination at the Boulder JCC. He still actively collects and reads comic books\, his mother never threw out his comics. He has taught Maus at Boulder High School.

SUMMARY:Jews of the Wild West
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nJuly 28 \nIn celebration of America at 250\, the Boulder JCC presents two films illuminating Jewish contributions to our new nation’s history. \nJoin Boulder Jewish Film Festival founding director Kathryn Bernheimer and guests to view and discuss two festival favorites that shed light on unfamiliar chapters of American history. \n  \n“Jews of the Wild West\,” which coincides with Colorado’s 150th year as a state\, will be shown at 3 pm\, with guest speaker Dee Dee Diamond. “The Levys of Monticello\,” which offers an unusual take on Thomas Jefferson\, screens at 1 pm.  \n  \n“Jews of the Wild West” highlights the contributions Jewish Americans made in shaping the Western United States. The story of Jewish pioneers who played a definitive role shaping the expansion of the United States has been largely forgotten. But by 1912\, it is estimated that more than 100\,000 Jewish immigrants\, many fleeing persecution in Europe or simply seeking greater personal and economic freedom\, had put down roots in the Wild West\, leaving a lasting imprint on the cultural landscape. (Directed by Denver’s Amanda Kinsey. Running time: 83 minutes. 2022) \n  \nGuest Speaker: Boulder’s Dee Dee Diamond is the great\, great grandniece of Solomon Bibo\, one of the pioneers showcased in the film. Dee Dee traces her family’s fascinating journey from Prussia to America back to 1812\, when great\, great\, great-grandfather Lukas Rosenstein first emigrated to escape conscription in Napoleon’s army. \n

\n  \n“The Levys of Monticello\,” which offers an unusual take on Thomas Jefferson\, screens at 1 pm. “Jews of the Wild West\,” which coincides with Colorado’s 150th year as a state\, will be shown at 3 pm\, with guest speaker Dee Dee Diamond.   \n  \n“The Levys of Monticello” tells the little-known story of the Levy family\, which owned and carefully preserved Monticello for nearly a century – far longer than Jefferson or his descendants. The acclaimed documentary weaves together the remarkable story of the Levy family with an examination of Thomas Jefferson’s legacy\, also touching on still relevant issues of race\, slavery\, and antisemitism. Watch the trailer. (Directed by Steven Pressman. Running time: 70 minutes. 2022) \n\n
