SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: Opening Night Reception and Film
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n 2025 ALL ACCESS PASS\nThursday\, July 17 at 5:30PM to 9:00PM \nReception at Hilton Garden Inn Boulder on Canyon. Outdoor Courtyard \nHeavy Appetizers & Libations (cocktails\, wine\, beer\, or soft drink) \nLive Music by The Atom Collective\, a jazz band making people happy on Colorado’s front range since 2019.\nKyle Banker at Piano\, Tobin Munsat on Drums\, Adisa Nickerson on Trumpet\, & Todd Van Selus on Bass. \nFilm at 7:30PM at Dairy Arts Center: Gordon Gamm Theater \nTHE LOST WOLVES OF YELLOWSTONE\nA captivating film from Yellowstone National Park\, where a group of biologists led by a charismatic woman set out to bring back the wolves – a project that changed their own lives forever. \nThe wolf holds a special place in the animal kingdom. The proud and feared predator is almost a mythological creature in the story of humanity’s own history. So when the decision was made in 1995 to reintroduce the wolf to the vast Yellowstone National Park\, it was not without opposition. \nLeading the project was charismatic biologist Mollie Beattie\, who\, along with her colorful and sympathetic team of colleagues\, was charged with bringing wolves back at a time when they had been extinct for 50 years. But not everyone was thrilled with the idea that wolves would soon be allowed to roam free again. The project became a political battle that required all of Beattie’s skills as a biologist\, diplomat and storyteller. \nThe documentary ‘Lost Wolves of Yellowstone’ unfolds this magnificent story as an epic drama with a twinkle in the eye – not least from Beattie’s idealistic and charming colleagues\, who experience the amazing and beautiful footage from back then for the first time. This event is in collaboration with the Rocky Mountains Wolf Project.

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: The American Southwest
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\n\nProducer Dr. Len Necefer will join us afterwards for a discussion\nThe American Southwest is a thrilling wildlife movie that chronicles life and death along the Colorado River…and advocates for its return. \nThe feature-length film follows the Colorado River from its headwaters in the Rocky Mountains\, through lush forests and iconic canyons\, and down diversion tunnels and irrigation canals on its 1\,400-mile journey to sustain both the natural world and humanity. Along the way\, the river nourishes diverse ecosystems that are bursting with life\, and provides water to more than 40 million people. From the recovery of elk and beavers to the endangerment of cutthroat trout and jaguars\, the movie showcases wildlife stories that speak to our society’s ability to both destroy and recover the natural world. \nNarrated by Quannah ChasingHorse\, The American Southwest is set to be the first-ever blue chip natural history film narrated by an Indigenous voice. Through collaboration with Natives Outdoors\, the film also features incredible artwork\, architecture\, and culture of Indigenous peoples who have lived in relative harmony with the region for over one thousand generations. \nWith a changing climate\, rapidly growing population\, and continuous over-allocation of the world’s most litigated river\, there has never been a more important time to inspire conservation efforts that ensure wildlife\, rivers\, and humans thrive. The American Southwest aims to foster a love for the region\, ignite hope for conservation success\, encourage action to return healthy river flows\, and raise awareness before the Colorado River Compact is renegotiated in 2026. \nDirected by Ben Masters \nRuntime: 102 mins \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProducer Dr. Len Necefer \n\n\n\n\nDr. Len Necefer is the CEO & Founder of NativesOutdoors\, a media and consulting company focused on environmental advocacy\, outdoor recreation\, and sustainability. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University and has held positions at the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of Arizona. \nIn addition to his work at NativesOutdoors\, Len serves as President of the Board for the Honnold Foundation\, supporting global solar energy access initiatives. His expertise bridges engineering\, policy\, and business\, using storytelling to drive impact in environmental and social issues. His work has been featured in National Geographic\, Alpinist\, and over 50 film festivals worldwide. \nAn avid packrafter\, skier\, climber\, and mountaineer\, Len integrates his passion for outdoor adventure with broader discussions on sustainability\, land management\, and climate change. His expeditions have taken him deep into remote landscapes\, exploring the intersections of water\, conservation\, and outdoor recreation. Through these experiences\, he advocates for responsible stewardship of rivers and wild places while showcasing the power of adventure as a tool for environmental awareness.Whatever it is\, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: Half-Life of Memory: America's Forgotten Atomic Bomb Factory
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\nWatch the Trailer >\nIn the suburbs of Denver\, the U.S. secretly manufactured thousands of atomic weapons\, leaving behind a toxic legacy that will persist for generations. \nThe Rocky Flats plant produced a staggering 70\,000 atomic bombs\, each serving as a “trigger” for thermonuclear warheads. Concealed by government secrecy\, the plant’s fires\, leaks\, and illicit dumping of nuclear waste contaminated the Denver area with long-lived radioactive toxins. \nA major—and highly visible—plutonium fire sparked a decade of mass protests\, culminating in an unprecedented FBI raid that ultimately shuttered the plant. Today\, the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats continues to threaten public health\, yet surprisingly few people are aware the plant ever existed. \nThrough powerful testimonials and extraordinary archival media\, Half-Life of Memory exposes Rocky Flats’ dark past and enduring impact\, prompting critical reflection on the implications of the nation’s renewed nuclear weapons buildup. \nDirected by Jeffrey Gipe \nRuntime: 55 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeffrey GIPE\, Director’s Statement \n\n\n\n\nAs the director of Half-Life of Memory\, I am honored to share this film\, which explores the complex and contested legacy of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant. This project is profoundly personal to me\, as my father is among those who worked at Rocky Flats and endured the severe consequences of the nuclear arms race. \nHalf-Life of Memory is not just a film; it is a personal mission to unveil the concealed realities of Rocky Flats and to amplify the voices of those who have been affected. Through meticulous research and heartfelt testimonials\, Half-Life of Memory exposes the lasting impacts of nuclear arms production on individuals and communities. \nWith rising nuclear tensions and a new buildup of nuclear weapons underway\, addressing the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats is more urgent than ever to ensure that lessons from its past are not ignored. \nHalf-Life of Memory stands as a tribute to my father\, to all the workers who sacrificed their well-being\, and to the countless lives impacted by nuclear weapons production. It is my hope that this film will honor their stories and serve as a catalyst for meaningful

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2025: Earth Protectors
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\nWatch the trailer>\n  \nEarth Protectors addresses our need to adapt as a species to the Anthropocene: the new era in which the impact of humans overwhelms natural cycles with fires\, floods\, pollution\, super typhoons\, and a deadly virus. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nManny Almonte\, our 2025 EARTH ANGEL HONOREE \n\n\n\n\nPrior to Closing Night film\, the festival will honor Manny Almonte with the festival’s EARTH ANGEL statuette for his work in environmental advocacy and education. \nGrowing up in the bustling city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic\, Almonte sought peace and freedom during weekend\, holiday\, and summer visits to his father’s home in Bonao\, an inland town at the foothills of the Pico Duarte mountains. “I was able to experience nature beyond the beach. Usually you think of the Caribbean Sea and how beautiful the beaches are\, but when you go into the land\, you find beautiful mountains\, streams\, and wildlife—and that is something that I always looked forward to\,” said Almonte. “I didn’t experience nature intentionally; it was simply life.” \nToday\, Almonte shares that way of life with young Black and Brown men from New York City and Denver and uses it as a vehicle to help them create connections with nature\, their passions\, their inner selves and their communities through his non-profit organization Young Masterminds Initiative and its Camping to Connect outdoor mentorship program. \nManny lives in Denver\, Colorado. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOCEAN with DAVID ATTENBOROUGH\, Biologist and host \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the trailer >\n“Ocean is by turns awe-inspiring\, informative\, deeply angering and cautiously hopeful.” – Radio Times \nOCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH takes viewers on a breathtaking journey showing there is nowhere more vital for our survival\, more full of life\, wonder\, or surprise\, than the  ocean.\nThe celebrated broadcaster and filmmaker reveals how his lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival: The Road To Patagonia
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n\n\nThe Road to Patagonia is a stunning\, intimate and unflinching series of love letters within a documentary – firstly a love between two people\, and secondly between humanity and the Earth. We follow Matty Hannon on an incredible solo adventure\, to surf the west coast of the Americas by motorbike\, from the top of Alaska to the tip of Patagonia. But deep in the wilderness – alone with the wolves and the bears – the journeyer’s plans unexpectedly fall to pieces. After losing everything\, and on the cusp of quitting he meets the girl of his dreams\, a permaculture farmer named Heather Hillier who throws caution to the wind and sells her urban-farm to buy a bike of her own. Together riding south\, the duo meet with Zapatista rebels\, Amazonian shamans and Mapuche leaders whose salient words crack the adventurers’ cultural veneer\, leaving them with existential questions. \nThe 50\,000km surfing odyssey becomes beautifully complicated by their decision to downshift from motorcycles to horseback\, presenting a relational approach to the breathtaking landscapes and a host of challenges that ultimately become extremely rewarding. Hannon and Hillier succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments during the world-first expedition\, and the noticeable lack of camera-crew becomes The Road to Patagonia’s strength. The theme of deep ecology underpins the entire film\, visually communicated through exquisite cinematography and emotional verité sequences. Shot over 16 years\, the result is an adventurous exposé on the more-than-human world\, offering a physical and spiritual odyssey to better understand our place in Nature. \nWinner – Best Film and Best Documentary – Byron Bay International Film Festival \nWinner – Audience Choice Award – Florida Surf Film Festival \nWinner – Audience Choice Award – Melbourne Documentary Film Festival \nWinner – Jury Award – Honolulu Surf Film Festival \nYear: 2024 \nFilmmaker: Matty Hannon \nRuntime: 90 minutes \nPRODUCTION \n10 years \nWORLD PREMIERE \nByron Bay International F.F. \n\npresented by the Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival AND DAIRY ARTS CENTER.

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2026: This Is Not A Drill
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFriday\, July 17 at 7:00PM \nDiscussion afterwards with director Oren Jacoby via Zoom \nAs extreme weather around the world grows deadlier\, a new generation of leaders is rising to face the challenges. In the American South\, hard hit by climate disasters\, three unlikely heroes take on one of the most powerful industries in the world. \n25-year-old Justin J. Pearson rallies a multiracial grassroots coalition to try and defeat a crude oil pipeline in Memphis\, Tennessee. Roishetta Ozane\, a mother of six from Louisiana\, transforms personal loss into political action\, taking her fight from the storm-ravaged streets to the halls of Congress. Sharon Wilson\, a former oil insider turned methane hunter\, uses infrared cameras to expose invisible deadly gases pouring from fracking sites and pipelines in Texas that have been hiding in plain sight. \nBacking them are unlikely allies\, descendents of John D. Rockefeller\, who have turned against their family’s oil empire to expose ExxonMobil’s decades long coverup. Together\, this coalition uncovers what they call Big Oil’s “Big Con”—an industry doubling down on fossil fuels while disguising the truth. \nWith gripping access\, THIS IS NOT A DRILL is the story of courage\, betrayal and grassroots victories that shows how people\, armed with only grit and determination\, can stand up to power. The smallest voices can topple giants. \nAudience Award—Best Documentary Feature (Globe Docs) \nDirected by Oren Jacoby \nRuntime: 76 mins \n

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2026: Three Short Films About Birds
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nTHE BIRDS\nTold through the cinematic experience of wildlife filmmaker Martin Dohrn\, THE BIRDS finds meaning and pathos as it gets up close to one of England’s little-known wonders of the natural world. As Martin chases down the twisting and turning of giant flocks of shore birds on England’s Wash estuary\, he attempts to literally record evolution in action as a peregrine falcon scythes through the mind-blowing murmurations – astonishingly large numbers of birds flying in synchronized patterns and creating shapes in the air. Ultimately\, this feature short reveals important insights not only into the hidden mechanisms of nature\, but also into the psyche of a man facing up to the end of his career. \nDirected by Dave Allen \nRuntime: 40 minutes \n  \nWILD HOPE: BUILDING FOR BIRDS\nMillions of birds pass through our yards during their bi-annual migrations\, but they face an invisible killer along the way: glass windows. In the US alone\, an estimated one billion birds die each year when they collide with windows. Now\, two organizations help pave the way to a bird-friendly future. \nThe Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington\, D.C. is located in the middle of a major migration route that birds have flown for thousands of years. To stop collisions from happening on their campus\, the Zoo’s team uses patterned decals to make glass visible to our feathered friends. In New York City\, migrating birds face a gauntlet of concentrated glass – and many do not survive. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center was once one of the city’s worst offenders\, but creative renovations have transformed the building into a wildlife oasis. \nThe Zoo and the Javits Center have inspired groundbreaking legislation that reimagines what our cities can do for birds\, but a critical obstacle remains: our residences account for nearly 50% of bird strikes. However\, simple solutions—like window paint\, decals\, or even a bar of soap with patterns spaced 2 inches apart—could save the lives of millions of birds. \nDirected by Tangle Bank Studios \nRuntime: 16 minutes \n  \nA MYSTICAL ORNITHOLOGY\nIn this lyrical portrait\, ornithologist\, poet\, and professor Drew Lanham invites us into his South Carolina farm\, where birdwatching becomes both refuge and revelation. As he listens for absent songs in the spring air\, Drew not only reckons with loss and memory but also takes action—cultivating his land as a sanctuary\, an underground railroad for winged migrants. His reflections move beyond science into wonder\, blurring the line between human and bird. For Drew\, they are more than names on a list—they are companions\, teachers\, and a last wild hope. \nDirected by Jeremy Seifert and Benjamin James Roberts \nRuntime: 11 minutes

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2026: Burn\, Scar
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nFilmmaker Hillary Bachelder and Colorado Fire Suppression Professionals will join us for a discussion\nPrescribed fire– the practice of setting small burns to clear ecosystems of overgrowth– is a critical tool for climate resiliency and forest health. But in 2022\, a burn set by the U.S. Forest Service in the mountains of northern New Mexico escaped its firelines and spiraled out of control to become the largest wildfire in the state’s history. Weaving together both sides of the story –  the locals impacted by the fire and struggling to rebuild\, alongside the Forest Service’s efforts to resume stewardship of the land following their tragic misstep – “burn\, scar” is a personal and nuanced story of resilience\, resistance\, and our enduring connection to the land and each other. \nDirected by: Hillary Bachelder | Length: 90 mins

SUMMARY:Boulder Environmental Nature Outdoors Film Festival 2026: Melt
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nIn his inimitable way\, Geyrhalter (OUR DAILY BREAD\, HOMO SAPIENS) travels the world of snow and ice. From Japan to the Alps\, Northern Canada to Iceland\, and Antarctica; MELT is the story of people living amid the gradual disappearance of the ice that was once presumed infinite. \nAlong the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Japan\, bulldozers carve out spectacular\, 50-feet-high walls of snow to build corridors specifically to attract tourists\, while the celebrated ski region Val-d’Isère in southern France uses artificial snow to create a winter wonderland. In Switzerland\, snowplows carve furrows into the glaciers to preserve the snow for the coming winter sports season. And in Iceland\, visitors pose in front of gigantic blocks of ice that are gradually being swallowed by the sea. Everything seems normal – but behind the apparently perfect white facade\, the world’s ice and snow are melting at an alarming rate. \nEverywhere Geyrhalter goes\, his subjects talk of melting glaciers and increasingly extreme weather conditions\, revealing how they experience climate change in their everyday lives and work. Filmed between 2021 and 2025\, MELT preserves some of the world’s most compelling frozen landscapes\, addressing some of the greatest environmental and political questions of our age. \n“A meticulous\, contemplative sweep of the globe\, Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s impressive doc takes stock of humanity’s toil to control ice and snow as the climate crisis advances.” \n—Carmen Gray\, The Film Verdict  \n“Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s latest documentary is a fascinating\, unsentimental love letter to snow and icy landscapes.” \n—Susanne Gottlieb\, Cineuropa  \n\nDirected by Nikolaus Geyrhalter  | Runtime: 127 mins

A former associate of the Hell’s Angels\, he sailed into the Sea of Cortez in the 1980s on a boat named Erotica. But while Terry’s friends have great memories of partying with him at sea\, his legacy goes beyond mere popularity. His time on the water transformed Terry\, who devoted his life to the conservation of manta rays after bonding with a giant manta he named “Willy Wow.” Over 19 years off the coast of San Benedicto Island\, Terry and Willy Wow developed an extraordinary relationship that changed our understanding of mantas forever. \nNow in his eighties\, Terry goes on the adventure of a lifetime in The Last Dive\, setting sail with his friends and a documentary crew in hopes of fulfilling his “dying wish” to swim with Willy Wow one more time. Director Cody Sheehy takes viewers along on their journey\, using Terry’s story as a window into the developing science behind manta rays’ extraordinary intelligence\, as well as the urgent need to protect these “gentle giants” and their stunning natural habitat. \nDirected by Cody Sheehy | Runtime: 88 mins
