Wednesday, 11/17/21, 2021, 7pm & Sunday, 11/21/21, 2021, 1pm – “Dancing as Ourselves” is an inspiring pair of films curated by the Sans Souci team. As a festival that typically screens mostly short artistic films, SSF takes a step outside the box with these two documentaries. This lineup was specially curated around a theme: dancing as ourselves, and features two documentaries we think make an interesting fit for one another. The first film features women dancing as men, and the second film features men dancing as women (the legendary Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo). Together, they meet at the intersection of gender, art, and politics, but with vastly different approaches, styles, and histories.

Can’t make it? Sans Souci has 3 screenings at the Boe this fall
Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema is one of Boulder’s longstanding favorite arts organizations, and we’re so happy to return to one of our most beloved venues, the Boedecker Cinema at Dairy Arts Center for three separate programs this fall — Dancing on the Planet (Oct), Dancing as Ourselves (Nov), and Dancing Through the Holidays (Dec).
Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema is a niche film festival where choreography meets cinematography. Based in Boulder, we’ve been collecting an archive for the last 18 years from artists around the world, and screening dance films, documentaries, music videos, and more. With an expansive definition of dance and an appreciation for highly experimental and interdisciplinary forms, this unique festival exposes diverse audiences to a variety of film, video, and performance possibilities. We open an annual call for entries, distributed around the world, with submissions curated by a panel of active dance filmmakers. We facilitate gatherings from educational workshops to public screenings to professional development for artists. While our roots remain proudly in Boulder County (Colorado, USA), our branches reach many locales nationally and internationally, and continue to grow.
