Broken Box Mime Theater: Destination Everywhere
October 30, 2021 @ 1:00 pm
Welcome to mime redefined! Comprised of original tales and interactive shorts, DESTINATION: EVERYWHERE is a boisterous, hour-long adventure that invites families to journey through invisible worlds. Set to music, lit in vivid color, and framed by a speaking host to guide even the youngest theater-goers, D:E celebrates the power of simple storytelling.
After mime-troductions, we dive into spooky sleepover tales, a jungle adventure full of untold acts of bravery (Duane boogies his way out of a close shave with a bear), and the making of a robot-concocted smoothie that elicits audience suggestions. We witness perseverance through carnival dart-throwing, study the work-life balance of a superhero on date night, and time travel through the history of Mime.
These performances will be “relaxed” in which the sound and light cues will be gentler, while we relax the theater etiquette that requires silent focus and stillness as a way to make the theater-going experience more accessible. Attendees of all ages, abilities, and needs are welcome, including kids on the autism spectrum and nursing mothers with babies who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend a show.
BKBXKids!
Our mission is to inspire unplugged creativity in children and families by way of joyful, movement-based storytelling, celebrating the power of shared imaginative experience and challenging audiences of all language backgrounds to explore new ways to create, connect, and communicate. Our silent stories say, “your body is powerful, your imagination is valuable.”
As we arrive in Fairytale Land for D:E’s finale, a flock of invisible birds takes flight. By now the audience seamlessly fills the empty space with feathers, the sky with fluffy clouds, and our princess’s brow with an opulent crown. A loving riff on “make-believe,” our use of sophisticated problem-solving and the decoding of visual cues lays the pedagogical groundwork for our work.
The Company
D:E cast members are trained teaching artists who teach silent storytelling, mime technique, and collaborative creation with BKBX. We have taught in public, private, charter, and international schools, universities, festivals, Head Start centers, and workplaces. Specified workshops include No-Language Play for non-English speakers (refugees and asylum seekers), Body Language for Conflict Resolution (first-graders), and Gesture Communication (collaboration with New York Deaf Theater).
