The Visual Arts Lecture Series brings contemporary artists and other experts in this field into the Dairy Arts Center to present and discuss their work in an effort to connect the visual arts to everyday life.
 

Gun Violence Panel Discussion

August 24 |  6:30 PM

In conjunction with opening reception for the solo exhibition of Deborah Nehmad, the Dairy will present a gun violence panel at 6:30 pm, followed by a screening of the film "Newtown". The panel is a collaboration with Colorado Ceasefire, whose mission is "Working for Freedom from Gun Violence". The panel intends to inform and discuss the issue of gun violence from multiple perspectives. 
 
Moderator: JILLIAN WATERS
Jillian Waters, a proud alumna of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, felt a call to action in the aftermath of the tragic events that shook her hometown earlier this year. As a member of the Moms Demand Action Boulder group, she advocates for gun reform in the Front Range area and currently serves as the liaison to the new Students Demand Action group at CU Boulder. Jillian believes a safer future for her two young children starts with intelligent, factual conversations about gun violence and common sense gun reform, and she is honored to participate in such an important event.

DAVID KAUFMAN: Boulder Police Public Service Officer
I have worked for the City of Boulder for 18 years, 2 as a police dispatcher and the last 16 as a police officer. I have spent 4 years as a patrol officer, 8 years as a traffic officer, and am currently the Community Services Officer. My job is varied but focuses on the safety and security of the residents and business of Boulder. I teach classes about various topics, such as shoplifting prevention, identity theft protection, de-escalation and active harmful event (commonly called “active shooter”). I also install car seats for new parents and organize police events around the community. As an officer and gun owner, I can speak to all of the local and state laws regarding firearms and the statistics related to gun violence.
 
ANDREW ROMANOFF: President and CEO of Mental Health Colorado
Andrew Romanoff served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009 and as Speaker of the House from 2005 to 2009 and at the time was the youngest speaker in the history of the Colorado House. He earned bipartisan acclaim as one of the most effective legislative leaders in America. Andrew authored the Colorado Economic Recovery Act (Referendum C) and Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST), the largest investment in school construction in state history. He also sponsored laws to improve access to mental health care, expand the supply of affordable housing, and protect the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. More than 50 state and national organizations have honored Andrew’s leadership. In 2008, Governing Magazine named him “Public Official of the Year.” Andrew earned a bachelor’s degree with honors at Yale, a master’s degree in public policy at Harvard, and a juris doctorate at the University of Denver. He taught high school in Central America and speaks fluent Spanish.
 
DEBORAH NEHMAD: Artist
Deborah Nehmad is based in Hawaii and describes her practice as a way to visualize and raise awareness of the enormous human cost of violence, war and injustice in our country. Nehmad will exhibit two bodies of work in the Hand-Rudy and MacMillan Family Gallery with an emphasis on gun violence.

In this session you will learn how to be a conscientious board director who understands your role in relationship to the organization. Through understanding the fundamentals of board governance, you will be better positioned to contribute your skills in a way that is valued by the organization.

Voyage to Powerful Board Governance: How to Better Diversify Your Board of Directors

Wednesday, October 10 from 5-7pm

We all know diversity is important. This session will give tools to achieve it among your Board of Directors. Attendees will learn what the research says about diversity and its effectiveness among Boards, different strategies to diversity your board, and how to access their networks to look for diverse candidates.

  • Attendees will learn the different types of diversity that can occur on a Board
  • Attendees will learn what the research says about diverse teams
  • Attendees will learn how to access multiple networks to find diverse director candidates
