Greener Grass

Glenn’s Pick – Glenn Webb, Director of Programs – Absurdist comedy can cut through social conventions like a knife, laying bare the contradictions and shared delusions. Taking the commonplace and making it uncanny and bizarre gives us a distance from which we can observe ourselves, sometimes with comic clarity. That’s how I feel about Greener Grass, which on the surface is a silly romp, but it has teeth, even if they are wrapped in braces. Consumer society is based on envy (hence the title) that we veil in politeness, but it doesn’t take much to expose its dark side. We are living through a time when greed is called virtue, and kindness to strangers is called weakness. And it is the role of satire to crank up the color and brightness so we can see what we are hiding.
Also, The Report is one of the most important movies of the year. See it.
