The Dairy Center for the Arts would not exist today without the support and involvement of the Boulder community.  Since its beginnings in 1990, The Dairy has thrived in the space of the former Watts-Hardy milk-processing facility. The Dairy’s adaptive reuse of an abandoned industrial space is a nationally recognized model of constructive urban development.

However charming our home, it is time for improvements, and the board and staff of The Dairy have ambitious plans to transform the space into a truly world-class arts center.  We invite you to familiarize yourself with our plans for The Future of The Dairy Center for the Arts, capitalizing on some much-needed safety and ADA improvements to create a more inviting and sustainable structure for years to come.  We need your help to raise $3 million in construction and renovation costs to ensure the Future of The Dairy.

The project includes six main features:

  • A New Inviting Entrance: A beautiful entryway that creates a sense of place and complements the existing historic structure.
  • Life Safety Improvements: Ease of exit in case of emergency, allowing larger numbers of patrons to exit safely through the doors they used upon entering.
  • ADA Compliance Upgrades: Complete compliance with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act. The City of Boulder, which owns the building, has placed a
high priority on completing these upgrades in all city buildings, and has agreed
to contribute some of the necessary funding for the project.
  • Energy Efficiency: HVAC system upgrades allow greater zone control and energy savings.
  • Alternative Sources of Energy: Initial design and budget include using movable walls and partitions to create options for lighting, using both passive and photovoltaic solar. Discussions are underway with potential partners to install a 100 kW array on The Dairy’s roof.
  • Additional Programmable Space: A larger lobby allows access to individual events simultaneously, using movable walls and partitions to create options for art display and events programming.

Every dollar counts toward our goal.
