The Future of The Dairy
What began in 1991 as a community effort to house local artists and provide a venue for live performances has evolved into an outstanding arts center. The Dairy’s adaptive reuse of an abandoned industrial space is a nationally recognized model of constructive urban development. Last year at The Dairy, more than 150,000 people participated in 35,000 lessons and classes, and attended critically acclaimed performances. The Dairy’s main lobby and venues continue to be routinely packed with crowds of arts lovers. Attendance grew by 38% in 2010 vs. 2009, while the number of performances increased by 8%. In addition to key ADA and life-safety issues being addressed by the City of Boulder, improvements that will provide better public access are being envisioned by the board and staff of The Dairy. Enhancements to the building and Dairy spaces will create a state-of-the-art facility to enrich and engage the Boulder community for years to come.
FEATURES
A New Inviting Entrance: A beautiful entryway that creates a sense of place and complements the existing historic structure.
Additional Programmable Space: A larger lobby allows access to separate events simultaneously, using movable walls and partitions to create options for art display and programming.
Life Safety Improvements: Ease of exit in case of emergency, allowing larger numbers of patrons to exit safely through the doors they used upon entering.
ADA Compliance Upgrades: Complete compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The City of Boulder, which owns the building, has placed a high priority on completing these upgrades in all city buildings and has agreed to contribute some of the necessary funding. Energy Efficiency: HVAC system upgrades allow greater zone control and energy savings.
Alternative Sources of Energy: Initial design and budget includes day lighting and both passive and photovoltaic solar. Discussions are under way with potential partners to install a 100 kW array on The Dairy’s roof.
